I've dragged countless threads off topic with my ramblings on guns so here's the official one folks.

[WARNING!] This thread is for gun fans only. I will not tolerate anti remarks in this specific thread for the sole reason that it'll instantly drag it into a flame war. Everyone has the right to their own opinion but this is not the thread for the antis.

If you want to discuss gun grabbing then fear not - I made a thread just for you,

guns? i like guns!

speaking of guns, i'm shopping around for a rifle. as my family is mainly anti-gun, i've only been able to acquire a 9mm beretta, an old .38 special mob gun, and a .22 Ruger rifle. i'm looking for a rifle with good range/accuracy and excellent knock-down power. maybe semi-auto, maybe bolt-action. i've been doing a bit of reading and am having a hard time choosing between a .30-06 and a .270. your thoughts?

have to start the thread, right with a joke.
Nephilim ye are not BLONDE are ye?
with that good night to ye..

A blonde suspects her boyfriend of cheating on her.
She goes out and buys a gun. She goes to his apartment unexpectedly and sure enough, she opens the door and finds him in the arms of a redhead.

Well, now she's angry!

She opens her purse to take out the gun but as she does so, she is overcome with grief. She takes the gun and points to her head.

The boyfriend yells, "No, honey, don't do it!!"

"Shut up," she says, "You're next."

Lol, that's a great one ireland! Kinda like playing Russian roulette with an automatic :P

Auslander,

Take a look at Savage bolt actions with the Accu Trigger in them. Savage makes one hell of an accurate rifle for less than the other biggies charge and they don't have the factory adjustable trigger that Savage does. I've a Savage 110 heavy varmint rifle in .22-250 that's punches clover leaf groups at 100 yds with factory ammo. They button rifle their barrels which is an outstanding rifling method.

As for cartridges you can't go wrong with either the .30-06 or .270. They both have their fans but when it comes down to it if you put a properly constucted bullet where it needs to go there's little difference. Interesting alternatives would be the short magnums from Winchester - the .300 WSM amd the .270 WSM. They're both hot rounds, very accurate and allow for magnum punch in a short action rifle.

I am looking around for a gun... I feel I need to have it "Just in case." I used to do a lot of hunting, and got my first .22 when I was 8 years old. My father taught me to shoot, and how to respect the weapon. I haven't picked up a gun in over 6 years though...

But back to home defense, I have never, ever, owned a pistol. Thinking about a .45, but not sure... It has a lot of stopping power, but a well placed 9MM round will do the job too...

What are your thoughts for a home defense weapon?

Also, if it is for home defense, (I have 2 kids) wouldn't a trigger lock, or a gun cabinet be a hinderence? I mean if someone is breaking in, I'd hate to have to try to find a key! Any ideas on keeping it safe for children while still being quick access?

Rambling a little bit... Sorry...

With the modern personal defense ammunition being made by Winchester, Federal, Remington, Cor Bon, Speer and Hornady anything from 9mm on up to the .45 are perfectly fine. The amount of money and research spent on developing these rounds is amazing and they're very effective.

In my opinion the best thing to do is shoot as many different types of pistols and revolvers as you can and pick one that feels good to you and that you shoot well. Many gun clubs allow folks to rent guns to try them out or if you have friends or family that own them ask if they'll take you out. Just remember to buy quality! Good manufacturers to look at would be Springfield Armory, Glock, Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Taurus, Sig Sauer and Beretta to name a few. Taking some shooting courses after you buy one is highly recommended even if you've been around them before. A good class will cover the basics of safety and really help you to shoot better as opposed to just going out in the sticks and blasting at cans.

As for the kids that's a complex issue. I don't have kids but I imagine if I did I'd look into one of the quick access boxes like this one:

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/standard-pod-wrap...

With kids I've found that showing them what guns are and what they can do is a good way to take the fascination out of it. Years back I lived with a gal that had a five year old daughter who was immediately interested in my guns when we moved in together. I kept them locked up in the closet but told the girl that if she ever wanted to look at one all she had to do was ask and I would let her look at one. She asked three or four times then no more - the mystery was gone for her. I also took her out shooting one time and showed her exactly what a .357 does to a melon. The exploding melon made a big impression on her and she knew to respect them and that they weren't toys to be played with.

oooo I just read an above post about home defense... Colorado has a little thing thats been dubbed the "make my day law" basically if anyone enters your home and your in danger...BOOM you are in your rights to shoot them and you wont go to jail....

I suppose its a good law... I can only imagine haveing a family and having some crack head break into my home and potentially dangering my family...I'd shoot...would you?

@ Neph : you where kidding when you linked to that XD.45 from the springfield armory, right?
Some dude at the range had one, and was sooooo sorry he ever got it....
The thing actually jammed after about 5 rounds every time.
I told him to re-invest in a USP, and he hasn't looked back since.

And to answer your question from the other thread : Yes, i load my own .22 ammo, might not be as good as ready made stuff, but the funny thing is that .22 is pretty rare here, and as such pretty expensive.
( i knew i should have stayed in the U.S.)

thanks, Neph. i'll definitely look into them! after some thought, i think i'm going to go with the .270, as it's one of the more common calibers around the world. maybe i'll pick up a 7.62 mm rifle. that would rock, lol. i have dreams (and will, if i ever have big money) of picking up a .50 cal sniper rifle. that would just be fun :D

A .50 rifle?
What type/brand?
And where are you planning to use that?
If in California,, then forget it, .50's have been banned there to my knowledge.

Speaking of .50 rifles, you wouldn't perhaps be thinking of this one

now would you? ;)

oh, i'd use it for typical everyday household tasks. you know, destroying engine blocks, sawing down big trees in one hit, taking out annoying neighbors from a mile away...that type of thing.

i myself use a .270 to hunt. i love it, its a really great gun. good flat trajectory and very accurate. id also like to have a 50 caliber rifle and pistol. the pistol would be easy enough to get, but the rifle are illegal to own in the states, but that doesnt mean i wont get one eventually.

sig made by me, i think.

Everyone please read.

Here's the deal fellas. I did some editing of this thread to keep it more on track. I apologize to those whose posts were deleted and hope you why and don't take it personal - I even deleted mine. The topic of guns is a very polarizing issue and I knew something like this would happen eventually and it'll probably happen again. My intention of this thread is for those who enjoy guns to have a good time without the flames and so forth.

As for freshguy, I missed what went on after my last post last night so I'm not clear on the specifics but I did get a good pm from him and don't hold anything against him. He has every right to his opinion but unfortunatey he expressed it in a thread where there weren't any sympathetic ears. Us gun nuts are passionate about our rights and don't hold back when an argument happens which is why any and all anti gun posts will be deleted as soon as I see them - this one's for the fans and fans only.

So let's have some fun guys :)
