Ok i am definitaly new to this dvd recording thing so please bar with me.
I have been transferring video via firewire, from my motorola comacast hi-def dvr box to my pc and recently noticed i cant transfer shows with 5c copy protection on them. i needed a way to copy these shows and so i went in these forums and people said that some dvd recorders will do it.
So i decided im going to get a dvd recorder. I have heard and read some bad stories on all the faults and glitches with dvd recorders, and how only a very few produve good results and a very few let your record copy protected material.
Can someone please point me in the right direction to the best dvd recorder i can get.
My requirements listed from most important to least are :
1)be able to record NFL channel 5c copy protected shows from my comcast motorla dct6412 cable box.
2)recorder that produces high quality dvd's.
3)compatible with dvd-r's
4)allows me to record Hd signals through svideo and have the resulting dvd anamorphic widescreen.(i know all recorders downscale the signal to 480i but my main concern is i want the show to keep its widescreen effect when its burned to the dvd.
5)Basically and all around quality dvd recorder. i heard JVC was the best.
EDIT : oh and i would possibly like the recorder to have HDMI output on it. but if there are no "quality" recorders with HDMI then i geuss i can get a seperate dvd player with HDMI out.
Any suggestions??? i only want the best :)

There is no set top recorder that will meet all of your requirements ... period. Sorry
What you may want to try is running a program such as AnyDVD ... this may allow you to record the protected shows ...

No ... you need to use your PC to record ... I assumed that you had a capture card since you had been transferring VHS to your PC ... apparently, you don't ... for $50, you can get a TV card for your PC and turn it into a TiVO type machine ... with AnyDVD you'll be able to record anything with encryption ...
I have 2 LiteOn LVW5005 DVD recorders ... they've been hacked and do not see CSS, macro or any protection ... the machines are getting hard to find and you will have to downgrade the firmware to hack them ...

I mean a standalone set top dvd recorder. it has nothing to do with a pc. thats what im going to record the cable television on (a standalone set top dvd recorder) probably a JVC one.

you're NOT going to do this with a JVC set top recorder ... My LiteOn recorders (after hacking) will do so as I stated in my last post ... however, not much of anything else will ... that is why I suggested using a PC to do it ...

Note: after about 800 burns, one of my recorders started 'acting up' I transplanted a LiteOn SOHW1693S (PC drive) into my LVW5005 and the darn thing works way better than new!

hmm i see. so if i oirder this from amazon i could put a hack on this? how do you do it, is it easy?
Have you ever been to videohelp.com's dvd recorder forum. They said all liteon recorders dont last very long at all. maybe thats why urs died.
have you ever used a JVC or a PIONEER ? and if so, did it let you record copy protected stuff with hacks?

I don't know of any mv hacks for JVC or Pioneer ... 800 burns is really not very many but the 1693 drive only cost me $36 which, when added to the $109 I paid for the recorder, still falls short of what the JVC and Pioneer cost

All im going to be using this for is to record NFL Channel shows. i dont know what copy protection nfl channel uses with comcast cable. do you know? i only know of one cpy protection they use and its 5c and 5c doesnt apply to svideo analog connections

basically the same way you'd update your firmware ... you download and unzip the file. Burn it as a data CD to a CD. Put the CD into the recorder and follow the on-screen prompts ...
One of the things that attracted me to the LiteOn was the ease of firmware updates and the plethora of on-line support ... the only weakness of the LiteOn seems to be the drive .. and most of the LiteOn PC drives will work with the LVW5005 .. I figure that mine has tons of hours on the electronics with no failures ... so I'll just keep sticking drives in them as needed (took me maybe 20 minutes)

To Catfreek...... i sent a shout out this is a repeat of that.
I am getting a [won't copy] error when i tried to burn a movie from TiVo to my new HDD (Mustek)....this has ALWAYS WORKED BEFORE on my ILO-HDD, that had great features but all 3 i owned HAD to be returned, damn.
the thing is, one of the movies [Blade 3] i thought hmm mabey it has some copyright signal c5 or whatever......BUT is was on TV and DID RECORD direct to HDD, bypassed TiVo.....so its between TiVo & Mustek....is there a soloution for this, remember it has worked on other DVR / HDD's
this fellow wants to record NFL games........my TiVo recorded the superbowl and other games in fact my TiVo has REC EVERYTHING...........not new commercial DVDs...what is that called, some device to filter that CR protect and allow burning of DVDs.......would that fix my problem ?
YES ........any movies i want to burn i could simply REC direct from SAT or Cable.......that seems to work, but im so used to my TiVo features which TODAY cost too much, they want $17 a month........im pretty sure any HDD some under $300 would offer all the same features mabey take longer to program BUT no monthly fee......i pain $100 for lifetime so that remains my primary recorder......BUT if you can, tell me what you know about dealing w/ these 'signals' that cause [copy-protect], ever hear of Mustek and does it have support or firmeware, i was interested in the Phillips HDD and the Lite-On but i had to use a 'gift card' for Sams Club.....this unit had all the features i needed like iLink, and most important it plays all the DVDs i have REC on other units, 80gig for $229.....however, i can't edit like the ILO could, that one i could delete commecials in HDD then burn to disc, this one i will have to babysit and PAUSE > REC> PAUSE etc. and as you know w/ DVD+R you miss by a little......crap.....your stuck w/ it.............why have a HDD if you can't edit.
sorry didn't mean to go on and on....but you seem very knowledgable on this stuff so any adice would be great.

You returned 3 ilo RHD04 units
You should have kept at least 1 of them. If you can get a RHD04 get it. There may be some LiteOn 5045 around. You may be to late for a HDD unit that will do as you want
[ mikj3131 ]
[ catfreek ] has been trying to give some good advice.--- But as the quote says
"Any suggestions??? i only want the best :)"
And to think that my 3 ilo units came from WalMart and LiteOn made then. Seems that I read that LiteOn is the largest DVD drive maker and I think they even made them for Sony and many others which does not mean that those units can be hacked
PS I don't believe the sima unit will be your answer

I've heard mixed reviews on the Sima unit .. In the following thread I posted a link for one and stated that I'd heard mixed reviews .. well anyways it's a short thread .. read it ..
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/326276 maybe it'll be of some help ..
By the way .. I exchanged drives in one of my LiteOn LVW5005 recorders with a LiteOn SOHW1693s .. now my set top recorder works better than new and it even booktypes now! This can be done with the ilo04 units also ...

you know i did think of keeping the ILO HHD 04 just for the HD / edit abilies.....but i would still want to burn DVDs right ???well that last one i had stopped being able to FORMAT DVD+R........the first one would only format 1 brand and they all had issues w/ what other units they could be played on........i wince when i think of folks saving all there VHS to DVD, in my experience VHS and tape based products always seem to be more reliable........im sure ILO #2 worked fine but all the DVDs i made would not play on other units which were a few years old......so will they ever all be universal ?
my problem now....get this, half the recent movies i have saved in my TiVo that i have been waiting to dump to DVD to make room get this [WILL NOT RECORD] message........Blade 3 will not transfer to this Mustek HDD....but when i recorded it direct from satilite IT WORKED FINE......i just tried it on my ancient VCR and viola......IT WORKED TOO......so im not sure it is a COPYRIGHT issue, and that device that does that......well i bet i could by a cheap DVR non HDD and have NO problemo.......but i have real issues with that, what a waste, to i return this....? ship it back and try the Phillips HDD or Lite On ? by the way.......Wallmart chain stopped selling the ILO HDD version for a reason......but i wonder where they all ended up, with enuff HDD space we wouldn't need DVDs, just keep library in memory.
still i want to believe there could be a firware update or fix for this.....it must be in the Mustek DVR cuz this has never been an issue w/ other ones.
still seek opions, ideas.........where do i get the copy-protect device ????
thanks

It sounds like you are running into copy protection that is not Macrovision but [a form] of one using CPRM, C5 etc. A flag that will only allow a copy to the HDD.[or none]
When you say you copied this before I'll bet it was to the ilo RHD04.
A VCR would most likely record because they were not compliant and ignored this CP as the ilo did.
I have Satellite service also. Unfortunately There is a greater number of programs that carry this flag. WalMart did not stop making the ilo. It's their brand. They no longer make the 04 [LiteOn, that can be hacked] series but do make the 05 [Cyberhome can-not be hacked]
For what you are trying to do there is no unit that will do so [that I am aware of]
You need to get one of the units I spoke of. if you can
[ catfreek ] has the LiteOn 5005. they can still be hacked, are very good but no HDD
I can see that none of this makes you feel better but it is the way it is
PS as to firmware. In most cases that is not an answer In fact the latest firmware upgrades from LiteOn can-not be hacked and in many cases you can-not go back to one that can. Also most units are compliant with CP
The RHD04 and LiteOn 5045 are not

LC...i appreciate you not blowing smoke.....some things are just the way they are.......but to look close at this why if certain media have this 'signal' embedded or hidden why does my TiVo and most DVRs have no prob recording it ?
I think its a Mustek issue ?
i have tried 6 units all together, 3 ILO and Cyberhome, phillips, emerson all worked w/ TiVo fine, the prob was they didn't recognize my library of DVDs that were first made on Cyberhome.
also don't confuse the 2 issues of [copyright] with copy from a source that already has it.........it sounds like the 0lder ILO and LiteOn are able to REC commercial DVDs that ypu might rent from Netflix....thats cool and all, but this is something a bit diff i think. If hollywood wanted im sure they could make it so NO movies-shows- broadcasts could be recorded of sat / cable....but companies like TiVo must have deals so they can even exist.........maybe a foriegn co like Mustek puts this 'chip' inside because they have no american relationship with TiVo but some DVR makers do (just a guess)
again....why would a movie once in TiVo alter its proerties that change from the direct TV signal that the Mustek has no prob with.........i even recorded the same 'blocked' movie to VCR and then went IN to HDD and it still had the block. i just want to figure it out....at this point i feel like returning the damn thing......my main priority is to create a DVD movie library which i could do with that cheap ILO or liteon but im sure once i did all that my new DVR would have some prob PLAYING some of the media, at least this works good for that. if i bought that SIMA deal it might work but it sounds like it would do what it was designed to do BACK UP DVDs so worth the price, but i don't even own a Mp3 which i could get for that $79.........thats why i still hope there is a simple fix to this.....time to call TiVo support i guess.
thanks

It is true that for the last few firmwares that LiteOn has used, the firmwares cannot be hacked .. however, you CAN downgrade your firmware (back to 098) and hack it ... I'm under the impression that LiteOn has made an effort to comply with all forms of copy protection .. It can still be circumvented ...
