blacks screen when trying to boot

hi all.
Could anybody please give me some advice on how to boot from the hard Drive.
I have a modded ps2 don't know what mod but its about 8 years old. just installed a 120 gig hd. loaded 3 games via winhip. 1 original and 2 backups they seem to have been loaded to the hd no problem.
I then boot ps2 using an ar2 card.
start game without codes
load hd loader (copy) press x
this take me to my hard drive but when i choose a game and press paly the screen just goes black.

Do i need to do something else. ie exploit.

I have never booted the HDrive the way you do but remeber that a lot of games need modes to be set from the HD loader or HD Advance main menu before you press X. I use HD Advance and you press the select button after highlighting a game in the menu to enable/disable modes.
