Slaughtered Vomit Dolls
Directed By Lucifer Valentine
Released: 2005
Starring: Ameara LaVey
Running Time: 70 minutes

The screen flickers to life as footage of a young girl performing a song for the camera begins to play. Before long, the tape jumps to the little girl all grown up (inferred), now a bulimic prostitute named Angela (played by Ameara LaVey) circa 1995. As the film continues to jump from place to place, it is clear that much of the footage is filmed by one or more johns, pimps, and serial killers. As images of people being brutally mutilated, murdered, and vomited upon, Angela relates stories from her past including working as a stripper, becoming a prostitute, and setting fire to a church at the age of 13. The film continues on and on as Angela is humiliated, violated, and finally, almost mercifully, she meets her fate which is hardly any surprise.

Lucifer Valentine directs Slaughtered Vomit Dolls, a wholly unpleasant film which owes a great deal to films such as August Underground and the Guinea Pig series. What makes this film stand out from most indie horror flicks isn?t the actors? willingness to induce real vomiting on camera but the technical prowess and adept filmmaking behind a work as repugnant as this. First off, the editing is stellar. While the film makes many rounds through the very graphic footage, the blender-like editing and numerous filters and video effects manage to create a hypnotizing miasma of dread and horror. The gore effects are exceptional and the frightening soundtrack never falters.

Not since Emily Haack in the monstrous Scrapbook has an actress suffered for her art or been more enveloped within the suffering of a character quite as much as Ameara LaVey. Every moment she is on camera, LaVey exudes pain and hopelessness. It is impossible not to be drawn in by Angela, an examination of someone truly and completely out of control. A very honorable mention goes out to the other actresses who portray victims in this film. Their characters are also brutalized quite physically in what are very, very tough roles.

Now, about the vomiting. Sadly, Slaughtered Vomit Dolls is sabotaged by its own gimmick. There are a couple of moments where the act of regurgitation actually fits into the theme of mental illness and depravity. However, the rest is just gratuitous and actually interrupts the already fractured narrative. While achieving the intended effect of nauseating the viewer, the film does slow to a crawl while an actor shoves their (or someone else?s) fingers down their throat. For instance, the viewer has to sit and wait while a woman whose eyes have been gouged out to induce vomiting onto a glass coffee table or when a serial killer eats a human brain and then vomits it back into his victim?s empty skull (oh wait, that?s a cool part). So if one takes into account that the film is using the ?vomit gore? gimmick as pure exploitation then it pretty much negates any criticism. Dang!

So for better or for worse, Slaughtered Vomit Dolls is out there. Viewers who get squeamish during puke scenes in Hollywood movies will want to put as much space between this film and themselves as possible. But that?s not all that makes SVD so explosively intense. This grueling exercise in reverse peristalsis also has boundless sadism and deliriously, lovingly filmed violence that is as poetic as it is vile. This film is both a well made and terrifying snuff-esque horror film as well as a wildly exploitative piece of garbage. Watching Slaughtered Vomit Dolls is a taxing experience and should only be viewed by those who don?t toss their cookies easily.
