Just picked up a spool of 50 from Staples, Made in Japan Sony 1x-16x +R, checked it out with Dvd Identifier...Manufacterer name Sony, Media Code D21. Last several batches from Staples have been MIJ's Taiyo Tuden. My question is are these great media, like the previous Sony's?

I picked up a spindle of the taiwanese +1x-16x sony and they coded the same SonyD21. When I went in there earlier, they had the japanese spindles with that same code.

After burning both Taiwanese and Japanese SonyD21: They reak! Burned ok,playback ok,but the odor reaks like nothing I have ever smelled before.Try sniffing one right after you eject it after the burn.

I burned these at 8x and will have to scan them with Nero speedtest later.

It's only a matter of time before they'll be turning up as Yuden000-T03!!!

@catfreak & saugmon, thanks for the heads up on these, I went ahead and just returned them, I have a couple hundred of the Sony's (Taiyo Yudens) in stock so it wasn't a major loss, just learning and wanting to continue to use the best. I have heard of the T03, but haven't seen any yet turn up. Hey, just a quick question to catfreak, are you a cat freak? I have three cats: Peppermint, Tiger, and Sabastian.
Anyways, thanks again for the info. and your experience. Have a good evening my friends.

@moviedud

i agree with the statements made by catfreak and saugmon, as to the YUDEN000T03s (16x DVD+R made by taiyo yuden) you're gonna be waiting a bit longer as they are not readily available yet here in the U.S.~ :)

my opinion of these SonyD21s in comparison to the YUDEN000T02s (8x dvd+r) taiyo yudens you got under the Sony brand, is that the 8x rated YUDEN000T02s are better~ :P if you've had success with TY media in the past, it seems like you have, then try to stock up on them while you can...it's only a matter of time before the TY 8x media becomes unavailable (locally re-branded by Sony/Fuji in the MIJ 8x DVD+R spindles) and will be replaced by the 16x rated media...so, get it while you still can (8x DVD+R YUDEN000T02s) :)

Thanks Doc, I will continue to add to the stockpile. Yes, I love the Taiyo Yudens, whether they are authentic Ty's or the ones that are used by Sony and FuJi. Those Sony's and Fuji's (MIJ) 8x are amazing. Hey, thanks again for for experience and knowledge, I know that everyone at AD benefits greatly, and after a while become Taiyo Yuden supporters. Have a good evening.

Looks like my main media will be Verbatim +16x.

That is so awe-some...doing what your passionate about and it involves man's best friend (at least at our household). Thanks for sharing.

Regarding the initial thread...our Best Buy, Staples, and Compusa have Sony's but they are all the 16x, not 8x. Best Buy and Staples carries teh 8x in 25 pk., but not on sale...what is interesting was that our Wal-Mart carries the 50 pk. Sony's (MIJ) Taiyo Yudens (they code as the YUDEN000T02s...so I picked up two pks. (I had some coupons so they were like $18.00 per pk.).

Is there anyway to tell if the Sony 8x +Rs are TYs without buying them and checking the media code?

My local Wal-Mart has a bunch of Sony 8x +Rs MIJ and I was wonderng if these are likely Yudens.

I have purchased 2 more pks. of 50 Sony's (MIJ) from Wal-mart and all four pks. are Taiyo Yuden 02's. What I look for is the 8x, MI, +R and (as Doc Ty suggested) and they are the Ty's. I read hear that the -R Sony's (16x) at Staples are the Taiyo Yuden 03's. Has anyone else found this out and have personally used them to see how they worked? Just curious. I usually buy from Supermediastore, and actually just received 100 Ty's (O2's), with free shipping for $28 or $29 dollars. Check through Dvd Identifier and DvdInfo Pro and just as before O2's, which burn great and I never have a problem with them.

My local staple's has only taiwanese sony 1x-16x-having the round/gray spacer in both formats.

No signs of Ty-g03 yet in my area.

Yes, if they are Made in Japan, then they are TYs. All the 8x +R MIJ is TY. It's been this way for quite awhile.

"The WallyMart 8x Sony discs will have an octaginal washer/spacer on the top disc .. then you know you have Taiyo Yudens ..."

That only matters if they're -R disks. Spacers don't matter with 8x +R disks.

I forgot to add that these were made in Japan not Taiwan.Knowing the Taiwan wouldn't be good and hoping the MIJ would be. I should've known better than to try something different.Ty's and Verbs the only ones I buy there's no luck for me when something looks to good to be true.Mother in law for example. Happy burnin Chris
