RiData introduces tough hard coated double-sided 8cm DVD-R

Posted by Seán Byrne on 05 April 2006 - 01:28 - Source: HomeToys - Technology News

The manufacturer Advanced Media, Inc. which markets RIDATA CD and DVD recordable discs have introduced a double sided 4x 8cm DVD-R which features a tough hard surface coating around 100 times more scratch resistant than the surface of standard media. The media features 1.46GB disc capacity per side and can easily be cleaned of surface contamination including fingerprints, ink, food/beverage spills and does not hold a static charge to prevent it attracting dust. The discs also feature an archival live of over 100 years and are three times more resistant to damaging UV light than regular DVD media.

These discs are intended for use in Camcorders, but will also work well for data storage and distributing or sharing multimedia content and data. As with other 8cm media, this double-sided 8cm media is compatible with DVD players and DVD-ROM drives. By also eliminating the static that attracts dust, these discs in turn reduce the amount of dust build up in the player, since there is less dust that comes off the disc as it is spun up.

These discs will be showcasing at Retail Vision; held in San Antonio Texas from April 4th to 7th 2006. While it is unclear when these discs are expected to become available in the shops, they are expected to be priced under $2.00 for a 10-pack.

Ridata Hard Coated, Double Sided, Mini DVD-R Features a 4X recording speed and each side can record up to 1.46GB.This creates storage for up to 60 minutes of Audio & Video recording time virtually eliminating the need to carry numerous discs. For security, the information on the DVD-R is permanently recorded (write-once) and cannot be altered or erased with an archival life span of over 100 years. The small discs are also compatible with DVD-ROM drives and DVD-Video players.

The special hard coating technology protects media against scratches that can occur when the discs are transferred between cases, camcorders and DVD players. RIDATA Hard Coated, Double Sided, Mini DVD-R 4X media are up to 100 times more scratch resistant than standard optical discs and will easily wipe clean fingerprints, ink smudges, and accidental food or beverage spills. Hard Coating features rapid static discharge to aid in preventing dust from adhering to the disc.

While it is nice to see another brand of hard coated discs become available to compete with TDK's hard coating technology, these write-once discs do have a drawback in that camcorder users cannot easily edit footage and unwanted footage cannot be removed to free up space. On the other hand, the ability to fit just over 4 full-size CD-R?s worth of information on an 8cm disc is a nice feature, particularly with good scratch resistance.

Feel free to discuss about this and other blank media on our Blank Media Forum.

that sounds amazing...100 times more scratch resistant...that would make them VERY hard to get scratched up at all. All cds/dvds should have this!
