hi,

i have four user accounts on my machine, and i can only access the internet on three of them. this problem has recently occurred and everything was fine before. on the fourth account, i can use programs such as msn messenger and WS_FTP, but just can't browse the internet. i have tried in both IE and Firefox. I've recently installed norton internet security 06, and even disabling that does nothing.

has anyone got any ideas on how i might solve this?

thanks in advance.

i had a similar problem, except I could only access internet on the administrative account. I contacted microsoft, and they had me try a variety of things before recommending I re-format my computer. that worked, but you may not want to try that because it's very time consuming, esepcially afterwards.

Did you per-chance happen to name that account using special characters? I am not talking about renaming the account, but when creating it to begin with using special characters? Firefox and other programs cannot access accounts created with special characters...you can create one with normal characters, then go back into the control panel and rename them later. Reason is, is that the Documents and Settings folder created for that account must be created using normal characters.

In other words, the Documents and Settings folder for example must be:

C:\Documents and Settings\Username

not...

C:\Documents and Settings\ÙşĕŗŇāmę

Just thought that might be the case as I found this out the hard way!

However, once you create a new account within the control panel, naming it with normal characters, you can then go back and rename it with special ones....it will only rename your My Documents folder, and not the Documents and Settings.

Try deleting the account and starting over...though in some cases if the Default User folder (folder used to create all new accts) under Documents and Settings has been corrupted, you can always try and copy/paste all the folders under the Admin folder to Default User. Admin folder is only accessible when you login as the main Administrator. However, you may have problems copying all files from that directory if you are logged in as the main Admin. (User.dat for example)

To login to the main Admin account without going to Safe Mode, logout...then hold CTRL ALT, and press DEL twice.
