Could anyone give me some advice please?

I want to buy a laptop to edit using TMPGenc Xpres3 and DVD Author Pro.

I'm dubbing old home movie Video tapes to DVD Ram with a Panasonic recorder then making DVDs with the above software, plus I have some Digicam tapes to transfer and edit.

I spend a lot of time away so portability is a big factor and a laptop is my only option. Do I need a Dual Core processor? Is hardisk speed critical? How much Ram would you reccommend.

I have seen some write-ups on the new Sony Laptops, but most user reviews really slate them for problems and poor aftersales service.

Any help much appreciated.

I can confirm the after sales service from Sony with the laptops is extremely bad, my friend spent the best part of a year getting his faulty laptop replaced.

The main advantage of getting the dual core based system would be to allow you to still use your laptop for other purposes.
If you can get a dual core laptop then go for it, I certainly wouldn't go back to a single core, even though it is on a desktop.

The more ram you can afford the better, at least 1 GB would be my recommendation.

I was struggling with 256MB in a Toshiba M1 for ages, just got around to putting another 1GB in and the difference is amazing.

I don't use mine for any video processing though.

I can definitely recommend Toshiba, as all the models I've had have always been reliable, with at worst only ever small issues arising on the older models that I had.
