Hello all. I recently downloaded the Two Towers DivX.XVid.ViTE file. I was wondering if anyone would help me MPEG-1 encode the thing. I've had several problems.
When I try a direct MPEG-1 for VCD NTSC encode in TMPGEnc, it runs fine for several minutes and then suddenly the screen goes blank. The audio screeches, and when the picture returns it is several seconds out of sync with the audio.
The interesting part is when I try to start the encode from just before the glitch. The screen doesn't go blank, but the audio is again out of sync.
When I open the file in VirtualDub it gives me this message: VirtualDub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file and will rewrite the audio header with standard CBR values during processing for better compatibility. This may introduce up to 13743 ms of skew from the video stream. If this is unacceptable decompress the *entire* audio stream to an uncompressed WAV file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder. (bitrate: 136.2 +- 19.2 kbps)
File information reads as follows:
Video
Decompressor: XviD MPEG-4
Frame Rate: 23.976 fps
Audio
Sampling Rate: 48000Hz
Compression: Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3
Should I attempt to decompress/recompress the entire video to DivX 5.0 format?
Also, TMPGEnc gives me error messages often during the encoding: invalid memory address? Anyone know how to fix this?
I have a Dell Pentium III 550MHz system with 384MB RAM...I do my encoding overnight so please respond only if there is a good chance that you have a solution that works. I will be happy to converse direcly over ICQ/AIM/Y!/MSN just email me.

Look for a program called avifixed and try and repair the corrupted frames in the avi file!!

avifixed just quits at 7%, leaving me with 11000 good frames. I think that the exact point it quits is where the error is.
I tried VDub-MP3 to find the bad frames. I deleted them, but then the entire audio afterwards is skewed. Shouldn't it delete the audio segement associated with those frames too?

Try using NANDUB because nandub was distributed with that release to fix the audio out of sync probs!

How should I do that? I have NANDUB but what do I do in it? Help over IM would be appreciated.

Well nandub can be used the same as virtualdub. Simple select the bad frames and attempt to delete them. Perhaps the sound wont be out of sync this time. Although there are no guarantee's that file has a reputation for being a bit messy!

thx, I will try that. I've heard of many people who've actually made it to MPEG-1, but I'm new to this and can't follow their instructions. Thanks for helping this newbie out.

Working so far. The preview audio is in perfect sync with the video--this has not happened before! Currently writing with full processing (changed codec to DivX 5.0--will this mess anything up?) Thanks again for your assistance.

Just a quick question. Do you think I was having trouble because I kept telling VDub to go ahead with the VBR header rewrite? I didn't do this the last time.

Progress Report: VDubMod is working. I wrote both segments (before and after glitch) of the movie to AVI. A/V was skewed on the after segment, a correction of -250 seems to have done the trick. Currently encoding with TMPGEnc to VCD format.

Help please! VirtualDubMod worked fine, the AVIs are both perfect, but when I extract the WAV and attempt to encode to MPEG, the a/v is skewed. I think it's because the silence from the Academy disclaimer at the beginning is not included in the wave file. Which program should I use?

OK here goes with the bad news: TMPGEnc always skews the a/v no matter what I try. Is there anything I can do to fix this? I like the encoder, but it just won't work.
Good news: I managed to get up until frame 11229 on VCD with Nero, which converted the AVI just fine!
Once I got the file, I removed the bad frames. I then recompressed the entire thing to DivX 5.0, with mp3 audio without changing the VBR. This was done in VirtualDubMod.
Then, I split the AVI files with VDubMod and used Nero to burn each to CD. Working fine so far, but I'll report back asap.

Instead of extracting a wave, set the audio to full processing mode. then click audio - compression, select no compression pcm and click ok! Now if the a/v is in sync on the avi you get, try it with TMPGEnc!

Hello all, I am new at this and am also trying to convert the two towers to mpeg format. I am trying to convert to MPEG-2 so I can burn to dvd-r. I have the same problem with the video dropping out at a certain point during the tmpeg encode process. Could you recap the process you've been trying to correct this error? Thanks.

I have now and I used a combination of nandub (to split and export uncompressed avi's excluding the bad frames), virtual dub (to extract the audio into wavs), tmpeg to generate MPEG-2 files from the new avi's) and Pinnacle impression dvd to put them all back together and burn them to dvd as one (working) movie. If anyone wants more specifics please ask away.
