I'm starting to get a nice collection of DVDs I've made copies, backups of, but all I have used in the past for my tools of the trade is DVD-Shrink and DVD-Decrypter.
My TV doesn't have rca jacks in it, so I have to plug the DVD player into our VCR, to get it working, so I know there can be a loss of quality this way.
But I'm starting to notice using DVD-Shrink, that the contrast seems to be off, or at least I think it is, still trying to figure out if it's my imagination, LOL.
It just seems like all the copies made with it, have bad contrast, things are darker, at least it seems this way.
I know DVD-Shrink has a higher quality setting on it, but I never bothered to mess with it.
All I want is a simple program like these, that makes great copies from DVD-9 to DVD-5, any other suggestions?
P.S. Can't wait till the price in dual layer DVD blanks to go down, because I have a dual layer burner.

DasFox,
Welcome to the forum.
You can try the AEC settings as it should improve but you also need to use good quailty blank media.
If you want better quality then use DVD-Rebuilder but it will take you 3X longer to do a movie. There is a free version so you have lost no money. Suggest that you use the HC encoder that is supplied as it comes close to CCE

Yeah I was looking at DVD-rebuilder, is the free version compression, quality the same as the Pro?
But with DVD Rebuilder CCE is a better way to go too, yes and I'm just making home dvd backups, so the CCE basic is good enough?
THANKS

DasFox,
Quality w/ the free version is the same as the Pro version. I have CCE but I like HC's encoder as I can not tell any difference in quality. I also suggest that you look into DVDRemake as it does alot that the other programs do not do and it might assist you w/ the home movies

For DVD Rebuilder on install, I got:
AviSynth is not installed on this computer and it's needed for the DVD Rebuilder's process.
YOU MUST INSTALL IT FIRST.
Ok well I found versions here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=57023
By the way which version of Avisynth are you using?
Is that Alpha ok?

I just backed up seven (yes 7) DVD's today all with "DVD Shrink" only, and most of them are less then 2 months out on there release date. I love it and always start there first, if that does'nt work then I go to "Decrypter" and the "Fab".
AnyDvd in the background has always worked for me no matter what movie but I always use that if it's absolutely necessary you know? Later.

the question was quote"Is DVD-Shrink Good?
answer. although slower than most and outdated, in terms of quality is second to none, its quality is iqual to that of Nero Recode2 which is better than shrink only because is faster.
remember, we are speaking about transcoders, encoders are a whole other deal and better than transcoders.
To those shrink lover. just use VobBlanker before shrink and you should have no problems. i'm a Recode2 man first and a shrink man second.
Nero Recode2 or Shrink using deep analysis and AEC/ fabdecrypter or anydvd running in the background/ IMGBurn to burn/main movie only mode= perfect.

elizerroj,
But he also wanted to know if there are better programs and I gave him an answer. I use Shrink to 10% then recode to 15% and anything else use DVD-RB if I want to put it on DVD-5. Shrink is an excellent program but for the bigger movies you really should use another program or use D/L disks; IMO.

I agree anything below 80% is RB. There is a difference in the backups, RB's are brighter, and softer. There is no bleeding of reds or too sharp of a picture. Fantastic program.

Using Shrink with quality settings, Maximum Smoothness and Deep analysis/Compress with high quality adaptive error compensation I will go as low as 65 to 70% with no visible loss whatsover. Recode2 also a quality product sometimes requires the use of Voblanker or FixVTS to eliminate minor file structure errors first, Playing back on a 50" HD TV picture is super in widescreen. It will take longer to complete backups but nowhere near the time required to backup with DVDRebuilder using HC or CCE. I have Nothing against DVD Rebuilder but its process time IMO is like watching grass grow. By that I mean I would use a DVD-9 before I would wait for DVDRebuilder to process my backup. It is a fine product but to say that it is slow would be an obvious understatement.

i know that RB with any of the encoders would produce better quality than rebuilder. i just can't deal with the time it takes to encode a movie. i have done levels of compression of 60% with shrink and the picture quality is very good in my 36 inches TV.
