my pc was pretty stable untill i tried uninstalling alcohol to update to the new version, after uninstall, had lots of error messages, and spontaneous re-boots, tried system restore with no luck , also tried virus scan but norton wouldnt complete scan

pc would boot up in safe mode, and in normal mode, sometimes would take a few re-boots before it loaded up to windows desktop,

tried running registry software but it didnt help
have tried re-storing windows from a partition but still get reboots as soon as it gets to the desktop

getting a bit frustrating to say the least

one of the errors was to do with the CMOS but not sure of the exact message - other messages were - windows has recovered from a serious error and this sysyem is shutting down terminating unexpectedly with status code 1073741819

win xp sp2
intel celeron 3.06ghz cpu
2 x 212mb ram
giga-byte mobo
nec 4550 dvd burner

3.06ghz celeron 160gb primary hdd 2 x 400gb seagate sata 150 hdd's 1gb ram 2 x nec 3520- shrink & burn
2.6ghz p4 40gb harddrive 768mb ram - surfing & dl'ing !!

hi

yes it doesn sound like it, although i followed the instructions and ran the tools, but they didnt find anything, also downloaded the Microsoft malicious software removal tool, but this didnt find anything either

well, there was nothing on there that couldnt be replaced as i try to keep it 'lite' to improve performance, so i thought i would do a format and clean install,

although now i cannot find my old pc case with the m$ sticker on, so im stuck part way through installtion

talk about a comedy of errors!

not sure how i would have picked up the sasser though, the computer affected was networked and doesnt even have access to the internet through the main pc,

seemed to happen soon after i uninstalled Alcohol 120%, i must admit i was using an "extended trial version" :) not sure if that had anything to do with it?

i knew it was too good to be true, pc has been runnning great for months before this

will have to upgrade to XP Pro now, whats the difference between pro and home?

think i might have found the problem

ran memtest86 and one of my memory sticks seemed to be giving off a lot of errors, seems strange, they were a matched pair but only one of them was working?

they are kingston value ram, i thought kingston was a good brand?

well at least they offer a lifetime warranty, it was only about 6 months old

try removing the sticks clean the contacts with a pencil eraser and blow the slots out with compressed air install one stick test with memtest then remove that stick and test the other in the same slot then try a test on both that will let you identify if its a ram or slot problem
