Hi guys,
DVD X Copy Xpress can now burn any DVD onto one disc. How does it do that exactly? Does it do exactly what DVD2One and DVD Shrink do (compression) or does it do something "special?" I guess my question is does this new version offer something new or does it give the same results as
1. Smart Ripper/DVD Decrypter
2. DVD2One/DVD Shrink
3. Neuro

This program is automated so that all you do is insert the original DVD in your dvd-rom and the blank DVD-R in your dvd burner and click start. The program does compress but without lose of picture quality or sound. However you will loose the menus. I would say dvdxcopy and dvdxcopy xpress are the leaders in the dvd backup game.

Thanks for your reply, ozy. The thing is when anything is compressed there's loss in quality so I don't understand how they can say that the quality remains the same. I read the Platinum version's info and they claim that it will have a patent-pending encoder that will fit a DVD-9 into a DVD-5 with no perceptible loss in quality. I find it hard to believe but let's keep our fingers crossed.

Observations after a couple days of use:
All "special features" are deleted.
All menus, including the main menu are deleted.
All audio is deleted, except the one language you choose.
All subtitles are deleted.
You can choose to include widescreen video OR normal video, not both.
Video quality is excellent, no observed artifacts.
These "deletes" should be no surprise, since the goal is to remove as much content as possible, and to keep the compression level down.

I use Nero 5.5 and I have no trouble at all making DVD copys or data disk, including erasing and formating RW disk. DVD X Copy express works great. I have backed up 9 movies
from my conlection since downloading it without a single failure.I even went out and
played them on six different players again no problems.I don't anything but the movie'if I want to everything I just pull out the orginal

John_galt is right, express first tries to fit onto a single dvd by removing extras, multiple language and sub-titles. If that doesn't shrink it enough it compresses.
Albers: to create a playable dvd using nero... you've got to have a playable format on your hard drive. That means a folder (or sub-folder) named VIDEO_TS, and inside the folder, the appropriate set of .ifo, .bup., and .vob files. Try playing them on the pc first using some kind of pc dvd player (I use powerdvd). If it plays, start up Nero, locate the VIDEO_TS folder with those files inside, select them and then burn.

I have compared DVD X Copy XPress to Pinnacle's Instant Copy with interesting results. Instant copy does not decode the DVD, so I rip an ISO image with DVD Decryptor, mount it on a virtual optical drive (using Alcohol120%) then run Instant copy to make a one DVD-R copy of the film. Using Instant copy ALL of the features are preserved, hence obviously the compression must be more dramatic. At the same time, Instant copy appears to take much more time analyzing first, and then variably compressing the film. The intro, and "afterthought" parts appear to be much more aggressively compressed with noticable loss of quality, but the bulk of the film looks pretty good - I think at least as good as XCopy Xpress (just my opinion). I note that XCopy blasts through in one run - much faster, but blows away the extra features of the film (invluding menus) and puts a warning on the front of the film that I find mildly bothersome.
BOTH programs appear to contact their motherships over the internet when they run, as my firewall detects.
Any other comparisons?

I have both DVDXcopy and Express. I tried copying a DVD that was originally material broadcast on Australian TV then made into a commercial DVD. I also tried the same experiment with "Something About Mary" . Previously I had done the same experiment with DVD2ONE. The results were that particularly on the Australian TV show which was a high contrast DVD with lots of close up movement, I could see artifacts. They were significant on the Aus. TV show with DVD2One, enough to abandon it. With Express they were more subdued but noticeable. With "Mary" I only ran the Express experiment. The results were acceptable for a DVD where content is much more important than esthetics.
I suspect that DVD2One simply decimates the original to fit, thus no re-encoding which would take a lot of time. This is a quick and dirty approach for SW that is only 90k. Since doing a complete compression using DivX can take 5 hours on my machine, I suspect that no one will be doing the DVD9 to DVD5 properly, which would require decompression and re-encoding with parameters that compress more. Comments from those who actually know would be appreciated.

It is not picky....and I did not get rid of it. The disclaimer at the front takes up some 300mb of space that could be used for program. The only way I know to get rid of it is to edit the play management file and then you still don't get back the space, just eliminate the message. I wish they could make it a still or just a couple seconds...
