Maybe someone could help, but i cant seem to back up my Memoirs of a Geisha-i usually use dvd fab express which works SO GOOD all the other times//
I am an ex decrypter, nero, shrink user because they always made my backups skip...and no i wasn't writing to fast, using bad media, or a bad dvd player...
when fab failed to backup my Memoirs of a geisha i busted out my copy of decrypter and tried it the ISO style still no luck...
my only guess is its too long...anyone have any advice, or having the same problem...thanks!!

If it's a matter of length causing compression errors, use Rebuilder. Normally Shrink 3.2 with the quality settings checked will do the long movies. Rebuilder does a better job of it though.
I still use DVD Decrypter and burn with Nero with no problems. I've never had a problem with Shrink skipping when used properly. So, there must have been something in the mix that was causing the skipping problems you described and not the software.
If it's a matter of decryption, then that has nothing to do with the length, just the limitations of the software in bypassing copyright protection. I always use AnyDVD + DVD Decrypter (with preferred slysoft settings) and use FixVTS if the files need processing for compliance. Then just about any good transcoder or encoder can finish the job.

Try dl the free DVDFab Express from the DVDIdle site, it is the ripper part of FabExpress and has just been updated and will do this movie. Just rip to your HDD and then either use Shrink, or you can try and open the file with FabExpress and compress and burn. Have you updated your FabExpress because it should be able to do this one.

Sounds about as complicated as what I suggested. I'm voting to send Arniebear on the road in a care package. ;) Instant help in a box.

What I've gotten so far:
With DVD Decryter: "Suspect sectors"
With DVD43: Smiley turns green, but Shrink has a fit. It encounters and error and can't continue. Says "Invalid DVD navigation structure"
With VOBBlanker: it too throws fits. Even if it processes most, it cusses at the end.
Just updated DVDFab, will give it another shot.
Oh, for those of you who haven't seen it yet, it has 3 parts instead of the normal 2. Audio_TS, then "Jacket_P" (what is that???) and Video_TS. Is that Jacket_P messing things up???

DVD Decrypter is obsolete as a standalone decryption tool and you couldn't pay me to put DVD43 back on my PC.
No, Jacket_P is normally just a couple of shots of the jacket. I don't know why they bother putting them or the empty Audio_TS folders in. All we're interested in is the Video_TS where all the movie files (video and audio) are located.
If DVDFab Decrypter or AnyDVD don't solve the problem, do a read scan to check the source disk. Slysoft has a 3 week full function trial for the AnyDVD. http://www.slysoft.com/

I had a problem burning this DVD also. I used pgcedit and copied both dvd's beautifully. On the hard to burn dvds this program is a jewel. It has a wizard. Uses all these programs.(DVD43, DVDShrink) and has a wonderful wizard that walks you thru it. So, if your a newbie like me try this program.

Or if you want to do it the easy way, just use AnyDVD or DVDFab Decrypter to rip it. The PgcEdit method is only necessary when the other good methods fail, unless one just likes the extra work.

I tried every which way and bit the bullet. AnyDVD and DVDShrink and no problems. This one is a tough nut to crack and I'm sure there will be more. Just keep reading the various threads, folks ARE getting these done.

If that's Nero 6, it was known to have problems with burning DL. As for Nero 7, I'm not sure. Supposedly it is improved. I've had good luck using AnyDVD and burning DL with DVD Decrypter. ImgBurn is the updated version of ISO W from DVD Decrypter for those needing more bells and whistles.

Shrink does a good job setting up a DL burn. What burner software did you use?

Neri. I've got 3 copies and the latest one says it's Nero Express 6.6. I'm using a BenQ drive but hate their software.

I am there with brobear. I always run DVD Decrypter With AnyDVD running in the background.
After the movie is decrypted, some but not all can be shrunk using DVD Shrink.
If a movie can be srunk, I do so then write it to DVD using CloneDVD 2 (created by SlySoft as is AnyDVD).
If Shrink can not shrink the movie, then I either write the movie to a Dual Layer DVD+R disc or see if I like the results using CloneDVD 2 to remove some of the movie. In either case, I always write the movie to DVD using CloneDVD 2,
Although you must purchase both AnyDVD and CloneDVD 2, I have found that the combination of the two rocks. I almost never burn coasters.

For those few releases that can't be processed with Shrink following a rip with AnyDVD and DVD Decrypter, FixVTS (free) usually cures the problem. Same software as incorporated in the AnyDVD ripper. Getting a "cleaned" compliant source is the most important part of doing a backup. Once that has been achieved, most of the decent transcoding/encoding and burning software can finish the task. DL burning is a bit more problematic due to setting up the layer break. As you pointed out, AnyDVD and CloneDVD 2 play well together since they were developed by the same outfit.

Need more than just 6.6. Nero 6.6.1.4 was a known problem version. 6.6.0.18 was more stable. But as mentioned, Nero 6 had problems with DL. I don't know if it was solved. You can ask in the Nero section.

You're welcome. Some of those problems are compliance errors induced by the heightened copyright protections. That's where FixVTS or VobBlanker come in. A quick test (not 100%) for compliance is to use the quick analysis in DVD Shrink. Most often, if Shrink analyzes it, it can process it. Since Shrink does minor corrections on its own, the quick analysis doesn't always mean the files will work in other apps. Usually the FixVTS and VobBlanker make the files compliant and usable by most apps.

brobear,
I just downloaded an update from Nero last night. On dial-up it took forever and there are a few more to go! I still don't know what version I've got, but my movies play just fine. I'm a hardware person so all the processes you guys go through are greek to me. I can edit the registry, so that takes care of things for me.

Version numbers of installed software can be accessed in the Nero InfoTool. The Nero site lists the current versions released, which is what you get unless you have access links to the older software. BTW, editing the registry doesn't fix everything.

@rickdg
It sounds more like your problem is due to either a dirty/scratched or imperfect disk. Try cleaning it or return it and get another. Since you are getting the error at the same point with both AnyDVD and DVDFab Decrypter it is more likely CRC then protection.
