I have been burning all sorts of media for many years and have yet to find a CD-R or DVD+/-R that has turned "bad" after a good burn. I have noticed that the "dumpster" brands tend to create result in a couple of bad burns per 25-50, but not at the terrible rates some have claimed.

Granted, I burn at no faster than 2.4X for movies, but will burn at 4-8X for data backups and always do a verification test. The movies either don't play right off the bat in a dedicated DVD player or play forever and outlast the rough handling my kids do to the backups (which is why I backup the movies I buy).

Does "bad" media mean a less than 100% successful burn rate or does it mean the media goes bad after some time. I know that sunlight is the enemy of recordable media, but do some brands have more immunity to it than others?

Thanks for any input.

the term Coaster means literally a cd or dvd that has been burned wrong in some way.. its nothing to do directly with any particular type of media.. some discs are made to lower quality than others but generally its the user that does something wrong to create a Coaster.. basically a cd with no use other than to rest your cup on.. my advice .... always buy rewritables as you can earase them and use them again

No other recordable DVD medias can make this statement,
Except for the TWO companies using Azo metal dye,
Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim.

So just because you havent had problems yet, just wait
a couple of years and see what effect "dye rot" has on them.
Personally I am not taking the chance and have only ben using the best,
I have some dvd that are going to be two years old pretty soon,
And they data is still inctact on this same media.

As the adage goes: "You get what you pay for".

I interpret coasters a few ways:

Burn coasters-failing during the burning process. For me,it's very rare and usually I find factory flaws on those coasters.

Playback coasters- These that successfully burn, but a stand alone player has trouble with them. I've also had a couple discs separate within a few days after burning. Thank god the 4x speed media is nearly extinct. LOL. Let the dvd-rw drive that burned those socalled coasters, play them to see if they may be coasters. Also verify on other drives.

So: If burner burns them successfully and that same burner plays them to near perfection- It's a success. Stand alone playability is another ball game.

Benqs + MCC-004 verbatim 16x+ 2.4x burns are no dice. These drives best perform at 8x,and beyond with the MCC-004 media.

I use quality drives and quality media. No problems with any of those benq backups. Now my other crappy drives that I no longer burn,I have seen them go bad after a few weeks. The main thing is quality!
