Why would you go to Memorex? That's a bad idea.

As for the bad 1st disc, did you burn at 16x? I'd try it at a much slower speed (either 4x or 8x) before turning to other media.

burned 1st try @ 8x trying it with ritek 16x(+) and shrink, AnyDVD and region free+css
looks loaded..........but don't think protection is the prob.
Summary for drive E: (AnyDVD 5.9.5.3)
Drive (Hardware) Region: 0 (not set!)

Media is a Data DVD.
Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 2 (opposite)
Size of first Layer: 2044400 sectors (3992 MBytes)
Total size: 4033216 sectors (7877 MBytes)

Video DVD (or CD) label: UNFINISHED_LIFE
Media is CSS protected!
Video Standard: NTSC
Media is locked to region(s): 1!

RCE protection not found.
Found & removed wrong DVD structure!
Found & removed Macrovision RipGuard protection!
Found & removed error zones between files!
Found & removed invalid program from program chain!
Autorun not found on Video DVD.
Found & removed 2 bad sector protections!
Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 1!

Hoping for bad blank, as 99% of movie was OK. Shrink takes 3x longer than clone, but maybe thats what I need in this case. could be example of slower being better. Thanks for the suggestion.

Two more things to check/do:
*Make sure your drives firmware is up to date (can help read/write strategies).
*Reduce your target size to 4360 or even better 4300 if using those brands.

Got it OK, updated firmware as well, but was a bad disk. 1 problem, I used shrink and it took 1.5 hours to analyze, then 2 hours to encode, plus burning time. Gonna stick with Clone2.
Thanks for the help

If all your things are up to date, and it's still taking Shrink that long to analyze, it sounds like your DMA has changed to PIO. You gotta set it to DMA again. It cuts down the analyzing/reading/buffer etc. time greatly.

With regards to 16x media I recommend using Verbatim. Pay a visit to their websitte. They have a detailed write up on 16x media, Their not all the same. See what some may see as gimmicky sales pitch I see as product accountability. Verbatim uses Advanced AZO technology, Sony says their disc are Accu-Core, well what do the cheaply made mass produce DVD makers say about their disc quality? "NOTHING" was the correct answer. And the end result is loud and clear in most cases "COASTER" is the correct answer. If I were to buy online I would only buy Verbatim or Sony............Tayo Yuden seems to suffer from counterfeiting and all though they're often purchased and highly recommended they too sell thier disc in mostly non descript packaging or atleast that's how the consumer the end-user often receives them. Hell, those disc could be anything.

I use DVDdecrypter and DVDshrink. I have been encountering newer DVDs that seem to decrypt ok, but DVDshrink says that it encountered invalid data and aborts; "an unfinished life" is one of them. Is there a new encryption algorithm being used, or is there some setting that will address this problem?

mcmenace, wow, that long to do this movie????

i used just latest AnyDVD and shrink, 30 minutes to complete it, i believe your pc needs some major updating, or some programs in background need to be shut off!

just my two cents

@sesko......clonedvd2 did it in 1/2 hour, only shrink took long time, not sure what's going on there. Shrink always has taken longer first time thru, but I attributed that to deeper analysis.

@mr. pink......good point there, have to check that, tried with region free css + but it won't set it, says it did set it to DMA,to reboot, rebooted, and back to what it was????

@N2DVD...buddy bringing me 100 verbatims this weekend, but Ritek Ridata were highly rated, thats why I bought 100, 4 coasters out of about 6 movies so far not much of an endorsement for them. Stuck with them, maybe newegg will take them back, they are pretty good when it comes to that. Got em 100 for 17.99 should have known better.

@all who responded, thank you for the food for thought.

@mcmenace
Yep deep analysis would account for the time difference between Shrink and Clone. Shrink with this setting encodes in 2 passes.

@microman
Decrypter and Shrink can't handle this one alone.(see mcmenance post on the protection AnyDVD gave) Maybe shrink in reauthor (main movie only) will. Haven't tried that way though.
So you either need to rip w/ DVDFab decrypter or have AnyDVD running w/ Shrink.
http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm (dvdfab decrypter - free)
http://slysoft.com (anydvd - free 21 day trial)

What I've found is the decrypted ISO has some sort of whammy in it that fills your entire hard drive with nonsense causing DVDShrink to out of memory error.
What I've done is rip to file mode with DVDDecrypter as it caused the latest version of DVDFabDecrypter to hang also. I fixed the files with VobBlanker and opened the file directory with DVDShrink, re-authored, endcoded then burned with DVDDecrypter.
Basically the process is you have to rip to files, not ISO. You have to fix the resulting rip with VobBlanker, then shrink and burn anyway you like.
I use el-cheap-o Verbatim DVD-R disks in the largest stack you can find. I've not watched the end result yet, however I'm sure it's OK.
Oh I forgot to mention every application used in this process was free as in free beer, not free as in freedom.
GPL these applications.
