I want to buy a new DVD burner, but I don't know if I should buy a DVD+RW or a DVD-RW. I would be using this burner to make backups of my DVDs to play in my DVD player and PC, and also to create backups of my Xbox games. What is the best format for this purpose?
Also, what specific burner should I get. I am not looking for speed, 2.4x would be fine, and money is an issue, so an inexpensive burner would be preferable. However, compatability with my DVD player (Samsung M101) and Xbox is most important.
Thanks for your response.

Hello
I haven't heard of this player so I did a quick google search and at
http://www.audioreview.com/DVD,Players/Samsung,DVD-M101/PRD_125638_1587crx.aspx read four reviews all saying:
"that this player will play all "Pressed" media, DVD's, Audio, VCD. But It will not play recorded media, and it doesn't claim to anywhere on the box or in the manual. If your looking to play recorded media the M301 is probably for you. I have never had a problem playing any DVD's on this player."
This is just what I found online. Does the manual say that it can play DVD-R discs? or DVD+R discs? If not then that may govern which media and burner you chose as you may only be able to use your computer. It is always good to read the manual at least once before throwing it out.
Personaly I am very cheap and in Canada the cheapest media to buy is DVD-RW, So I bought a DVD-Rw burner. I would recomend a combo burner as it doesn't limit you, but is more expensive.
Hope this helps.

I know that my DVD player will play DVD+R discs, but that is the only DVD media I have tested with it.
Where can I find the cheapest combo burner? Is the only combo burner the one made by Sony?
Thanks again.

Hello
The multi drives I know of are the Sony 500, and the new Hitachi GSA-4040B which boasts DVD-R and DVD+R at 4x, DVD+RW and DVD-RW at 2x and DVD-RAM at 3x. This is the only combo drive that I know of that will burn to all DVD available formats. But if your not desperate for a Drive, it is rumoured that Mitsubishi has high powered lazers for close to 16x dvd burning. The article I read in PCWorld.com in December said that info will be available in June of this year. But if cost is a consern, I can garentee that a 16x DVD burner will be really expensive. So if you want all formats look at this Hitachi, but the Sony is well used a most people on this forum seem to have one. So if there any troubles help may be easier with the Sony.

16x burner ? Which hard drive would one need??!!! I have a 120GB, 7200RPM, 8MB cache drive and it has already enough with 4x!I think 6x or 8x would already be the limit for fast desktops nowadays!

I don't know why you bring up hard drives, the major issure with DVD burners is the lazer intensity. For an early generation burner the lazers were 0.5mW, and a 16x burner would require around a 60mW lazer. THe cache size and storage buffer should not be too much of an issue. Just tack on a Ram chip of 256 or 512Mb to the burner and the hard drive should not be involved. However it looks like now more work is going into the blue lazers then the high power lazers. The Sony drive using a 405nm lazer instead of the DVD 650nm or 635nm(authourative lazer) can allow for 30GB on one side one layer of a standard disc. this is in competion with the Blu-ray BDZ-S77 disc recorder with only 27GB on one side one layer. So the next generation of DVD is still in question.

Where can I find the sony or hitachi drives? I've looked on ebay and I couldn't find the hitachi drive at all. I can't even find any information on hitachi's web site. But the Sony drive retails for $350, but I've fonud it on ebay for about $300. Should I buy this drive, or go for a Pioneer 104, which is cheaper, and the preferable DVD-R format?

Hello
I may have goten your hopes up with the Hitachi GSA-4040B drive. Looks like may not be released until June to mid june. But PC-World says they will be making 500000 a month because they expect them to be sold out like the Sony drive was when it first came out. For the Sony drive, I am guessing your in the US. I say it a bestbuy once in the 300 range, you may be able to find it cheaper. Just do some searches.
Good Luck
