How do other owners go about transferring files from their Handycams? I was under the impression it would be easy, but it doesn't seem to be!

I have tried to put it through my TV via the back of my DVD player and then record it onto VCR, but this doesn't work as the VCR only records from channel AV1, whereas the DVD player plays on channel AV2!

I have tried burning a DVD from my friend's recordable DVD machine, but for some reason the burned DVD only plays on Sony DVD players, something to do with the type of blank DVD - DVD+Rs and DVD-Rs apparently, don't ask me.

I have managed to burn avi files and mpegs from the handycam, but I have no DVD writer, only a CD writer.

Furthermore, I have been transferring the files using a normal USB lead, as I have a Firewire but no Firewire card. I use a laptop that I don't actually own personally, and so I'd need an external Firewire card but can't find one. I guess this is irrelevant anyway, as I can only transfer like 4 minutes at a time into an avi file on my laptop as the memory is so small. The best thing for me is to transfer using a recordable DVD player or a VCR, but I'm having real trouble with this.

Surely it has to be a bit easier than this!

Anyone got any ideas?
