Are you "swapping" your trigger disk with your backup, then booting using cogswaploader? Because you can't use the eject button with cogswap. You have to swap.

Yes but you cant possibly not do it or the ps2 will think its psx game. My trigger is a ps1 game as you probably already know.

Yeah I know. I used the exploit until recently. Whenever I wanted to boot backups, I always used cdloader not cogswap.

Try this, when you want to boot your dvd backup, push eject and put in a high TOC ORIGINAL PS2 game(high TOC such as GTA:SA or Vice City. Wait for it to read. Then use the swap trick and swap that PS2 game with your backup. Then go. That's how cogswap works if I remember right.

Try using cdloader instead of cogswaploader. You can get it here http://console.iscentral.net/index.php?go=downloads&cat=6 . Scroll down it's "CD Loader 7.5". It's usage is basically the same as cogswaploader, you start cdloader, eject, insert original high TOC games, let it read that for a few seconds, swap that with your backup, and go. I've had better luck with cdloader then cogswap, myself.
