With Swap Magic 3.6 it is possible to load homebrew apps from a USB Pen Drive. So I would say that this method is a whole lot simpler. The only thing is that it only configures 4 apps. You could put the HDLoader ELF onto the Pen Drive and load it from there. Here is how to do it:
Connect your Pen Drive to your PC. Then open up your Pen Drive. Once within the Pen Drive create a new Folder and name it SWAPMAGIC it has to be written in all caps and no space between swap and magic for this to work. Now that you have created this folder it is time to put 4 homebrew apps of your choice into the folder. The apps have to be in the Elf format. Once you have the apps , in ELF format, into the SWAPMAGIC folder it is now time to rename the apps in order for Swap Magic 3.6 to recognize and boot. You must rename the apps accordingly, SMBOOT0.ELF, SMBOOT1.ELF, SMBOOT2.ELF and SMBOOT3.ELF Here are the methods in which you will use to boot the apps from the Swap Magic 3.6 start screen: UP + L1 = SMBOOT0.ElF, UP + L2 = SMBOOT1.ELF, UP + R1 = SMBOOT2.ELF, and UP + R2 = SMBOOT3.ELF
So once you've finished creating the SWAPMAGIC folder in your Pen Drive and put the 4 hombrew apps in ELF format and renamed them like I said above, plug the Pen Drive into your PS2 USB port. I use a PS2 v5/6 so the USB ports are on the bottom left side of the PS2. Plug the Pen Drive into the Top USB port, start up your PS2 and load Swap Magic 3.6. Once it has loaded and you are at the main screen. Use the methods in which I explained to load the app of your choice. For instance I have the HDLoader patched version ELF as SMBOOT0.ELF so to load it all I do is press UP + L1 at the Swap Magic 3.6 main screen and presto, HDLoader has now booted. I no longer have to swap discs. I just leave my Swap Magic 3.6 disc in my PS2 with the Pen Drive also connected and when I feel like accsessing my HDD I just press a few buttons and I'm there.
I hope this helps you out. If you have any problems, post and I'll try and help you out. As far as the HDD enclosure and HDD within the PS2 I would have to say they work about the same. I personally never used a HDD Enclosure but I wouldn't see any problems with it. It's pretty much the same thing just the data is bein' transfered a little different. Hope this helps you out some what. Peace.
