Canon ZR300 problems...

I have had this Canon ZR300 for about a year now, and it's never given me trouble. I hadn't used it for a bout 3 months. It sat on a cabinet untouched. I took it out to use it yesterday and while it still says it records, upon attempted playback it will not play. It won't display sound or video on the screen, while the screen still displays the blue "tape playing" animation. I tried hooking it up via firewire to my PC, but it only displays black if I try to capture video. I emailed Canon last night, but something tells me they're just going to tell me to send in my camera with some amount of money I don't feel like spending. Any ideas of a cause or fix for this problem?
