the one way to stop the banned newbies to sign right back up after they are banned,is to bring back the 3-day waiting period.
like we use to have.meaning ye would have to wait 3-days b-4 ye can post after ye sign up......that just might knock the sails off there boat.

that would also work with the spam heads........

Good idea. Might just might encourage some of the newbies to read a little before they jump right in posting the 101st thread on Narnia, etc.

More often than not they come right back under a new nick. Maybe the temprary ban could include the ip that the original account was made under?

IMO it's not such a good idea as it might discourage people from the forum. A lot of the best members we have cme here to ask something, and most likely made a post rigfht after they made an account, what would have happened if it said they had to wait 3 days? im not sure that after 72 hours they would still be waiting to ask a question lol

It would work in a lot of cases but then there are also other problems. Not a lot of standard ISPs offer static IPs to their customers, so literally cycling the connection may give a user a different IP address. That also creates the possibility of users being assigned an IP that is blacklisted here, but that's probably a small miniscule chance.

Another problem is proxy servers. Someone might be using a public proxy to visit aD, get banned, IP is blacklisted - thousands of other people may use the same proxy so AfterDawn would see all as same IP (if it was anon proxy). Tor users would also be at risk, and considering the huge number of people who use Tor & Privoxy to surf - blacklisting nodes IPs could stop quite a few people getting an account here. Also if someone has enough knowledge to use Tor, then they are way above the average newbie, so they'd be exactly what we'd weant signing up :-) lol

I would not go for blocking someone's IP or blocking them from signing up because an account had that IP when suspended BUT, I think it would be nice if an automated system alerted all mods when an account is made using an IP that has been archived as banned before so someone's posts can be monitored, what ya think?

yup, the kiddiewinks are just taking advantage of the new temporary bans, we're just having to sit on them for longer :)

the same might apply,
Another problem might be using proxy servers or aol using or having the same ip as the banned persons ip..
