I have a Freecom external dvd writer, It has been working fine for almost a year but all of a sudden I am getting the message that the device has malfunctioned and is not recognised. I have tried the obvious and restarted the pc and stuff but it is saying that the drivers are not installed. The thing is I am only supposed to install the drivers if I am running windows 98, but my OS is xp pro. I have never had this happen before can anyone help with this, it's driving me nuts, Thanks.

Hello, first of all inform us some basic info like:
-Model number.
-Port used to connect your drive to the PC (USB,Firewire).
The main possibilities are:
1.
-File corruption on the OS part (software problem, totally recuperable)
Causes: You may have gotten a virus, or some kind of worm that may have corrupted your OS files, causing you problems like the one you are explaining.
Solution: Do a Fresh install of the OS, or at least do a repair of it.
2.
-You may have installed a software or an update, that maybe in conflict with the drivers you are now using.
Solution: Update the firmware or you dvd writer, and if you have installed any new hardware or software do an update and check for compatibilitie problems.
Causes: New hardware or software that is causing a conflict.
3.
-Malfunction of the drive, your out of luck :(
Solutions: Send it to warranty
Causes: Difficult to tell.
I wanna make clear that these are Possibilities, so we need to discard them in order to be sure what is the problem, before you start looking for solutions, it is indispensable that you have clear what maybe causing the problem, and here we would help you find it, but provide us with basic info like: PC specs or model number if it is the case, Model number of your DVD writer, software hardware installed recently.

It is connected via usb, model number I am not sure about. It's called classic freecom dvd writer thats all I know. My daughter did say that that something came up yesterday about an error in windows (she was not useing the writer) but I never got to check it as she just logged off and told me later.

Here is a list of the firmware for freecom burners,
i would recommend repairing windows and/or installing a fresh
copy of sp2 (service pack 2),
Then updating your firmware to the newest available,
It sounds like something has corrupted the program,
maybe a 'fresh' install would do the trick.
Cheers!

Do NOT do a Windows repair install or a new install of Windows until your run System File Checker first!
Go to Start > Run > type the following (without the quotes):
"sfc /scannow"
NOTE: there is a space between the c and /
Have your Windows CD handy as it will ask for it.
System File Checker will replace any system files that are missing or have been corrupted.
If this doesn't work there are other things to do before a Windows re-install.
Post back and let us know your progress.

It is very clear that windows may have been corrupted and I said before a reinstall or Repair maybe needed, and as our member dolphin2 said it is indispensable that you do not only this check but check for viruses too, just in case the problem may not be only risking your burner but also other parts of the OS, tells us the results, and if the problem persist maybe it will be time to do a fresh install of the OS, in order to get everything in order again, but remember do this checks first as the may solve your problem without the hassle of doing a fresh install of windows.
