Hello experts,

I am very much a novice at understanding video converting and file types, but have tried to look around before posting ...

I have (am) downloading various video files via P2P which inconveniently (!) are often very large. Generally they seem to be .avi files.
I need to convert them to a smaller .wmv (or Real media) file because my small hard drive is running out of space.

I am finding some success using the free trial version of FX Video converter, although it seems to take about 4 times the duration of playback time to complete.

However, Windows Media Encoder seems to consistently fail to handle my .avi files. Is this to be expected ? Or is there a (free) something or other I can add or use to do the job ?

In case it's relevant, here are some specs of a typical file that WME seems unwilling to convert :

Audio
Bit rate 128 kbps
Format MPEG Layer-3

Video
Data rate 124 kbps
Video sample rate 12 bit
Video compression XVID
