what kind of dvd or cd do you need to burn the games to, does it matter?

most games are dvd but some are on cd. in my experience the older ps2's tend to prefer DVD-R. make sure you use good quality media like taiyo yuden, verbatim, sony (made in japan) discs & also burn at the slowest speed possible.

you also need to mod your ps2 (chip/disc) for it to play back up games

I've heard that most if not all ps2 games use a DVD-R not DVD+R, is that true? If so, how can i deal with it?

yes most ps2's (in my experience) seem to play better with DVD-R. DVD+R causes loading problems & glithes in the game.
if your drive only burns DVD+R then you can booktype the disc (if your drive supports booktyping) to make it more compatible with the ps2
do a search for how to booktype as i cant find the link
