My intent of this thread is to get some good insight on both points of view. The two points of view are obviously; a) Yes its okay to download music and here's why and b) no its not okay to download music and here's why.
Please if you don't have something intelligent to say then don't say it. The only reason I'm starting this is because a really good friend of mine and I are having an on going debate about weither or not its okay to download music. She is of the school of thought who believes its not okay. She won't even let me rip her cds! And I'm one who beleives that its okay.
I have several reasons why I believe its ok. The first of which is that if I download some songs (or album) and listen to it and like it, when the band comes to town I'll buy a ticket...Which is really where the bands get there money (merch, ticket sales and etc). I also think that if I really, really like the particular band then I'll buy the cd. So if I hadn't downloaded it in the first place then I would never know, thus I wouldn't buy the cd.
Ok lets get this thing going.. And please for the love of God if you don't have something intelligent to say then don't say it. Don't turn this into a Flame War. Don't Bash, don't say something just to get your voice out there..unless what you have to say is relevant and holds water..

I'm not sure if I'd call it wrong or right, really. If I was a musician putting out the music, I'd call it wrong all the way. You are in a way stealing somebody else's work and getting it for free.
But, I do it anyways, LOL. I think that if we all had to pay for 100% of our music, then we'd all be broke. Limewire, Bearshare, etc. are a blessing for those of us who don't want or can't pay for our music.

I hear you on the artist thing. I was thinking too that if I was an artist then I would purposely release music into the p2p world just to get my name out there....which actually now that I think of it is Exactly what Myspace Music is doing.
What about if the artist is dead? That money is either going to the family or to a large recording company. I was telling this to her last night and she basically ran it down that Sharing Music is not about the Money but more so the Respect. I think that if you listen and enjoy and buy concert tickets...thats respect.

Yeah, I don't think that it has anything to do with respect. I think that if the person is dead, than it is definantely fine, their family didn't work hard to put the music out.
I'm still not sure what my full thought of the whole thing is. As I posted above, I think that is wrong in some ways, but I still use it. I just know that If I was an music artist I would be pissed about this subject. But, all the musicians out there are so damn rich anyways that it really doesn't matter, not like they need the money.
I will probably use Limewire until it is no longer around. There will always be sites out there where you can download free music, no matter how illegal it is. That's just my insight. :)

no, the signals was sent to england as the only radio station was the bbc. remember this is the early 60's in the uk which was totally different from north america with dozens of radio stations. the bbc would shut down around 10 or 11pm til maybe 7am in the morning & did not play than modern music.

Those ships took the signals that were coming from bbc and sent them to england at night so people could listen to the beatles?

no, the ships had radio stations on them that broadcast the signal all over the uk which the bbc did not like. so the bbc went to the govt which controlled the bbc if not owned it to past legislation to ban these radio pirate ships eventho were in international waters.

i have no problem with it for a number of reasons. not all music stores have all music of all types, just the popular ones. so were do you get hard to get music if not of friends & not from stores but off the net. consider this, you buy a book, read it that sell it to a book store so somebody else buys it for about half of what you paid for. where does the money from the 2nd or more buyer goes to. not to the author or publisher but to the store owner. same goes to computers, cars, homes & whatever. the original builders, designers or whatever get money when these are sold & bought again & again.

note:i do not know a thing about this site..its up to ye to find out..
PANDORA..........We love this one. According to the site, "Pandora is a music discovery service designed to help you find and enjoy music that you'll love. It's powered by the Music Genome Project, the most comprehensive analysis of music ever undertaken. Just tell us one of your favorite songs or artists and we'll launch a streaming station to explore that part of the music universe. We take your input (artists, songs) and feedback ("I like this", "I don't like this") and use the Music Genome Project to create stations that play songs that are musically similar to what you've told us. That's it; only the music counts. We don't care how popular the artist is, who's backing them, and we don't care which genre bin they usually belong in. Only the music matters." Here's the FAQ
http://blog.pandora.com/faq/index.html which you might need to start using Pandora. (Eventually to be ad supported).....(free).....GO THERE!

Good old Radio Caroline!
Once the wealth of the few help the poor & homeless, then & only then will I feel guilty about downloading. These companies, music & movie, have no qualms about paying someone millions, while children go hungry. That is just so wrong. When people can get decent health care & decent legal representation etc, then I will not feel guilty.
I hate the fact that football players get payed obscene amounts of money, football shirts, trainers etc for the masses cost a fortune (even though they are made for pennies in sweat shops).
Once the world is balanced & fair then I will feel guilty or think that downloading is wrong.

Piracy hmmm....Years ago in the golden age of vinyl, cassettes and yes even 8-tracks (yes I'm old) it was perfectly legal to make a tape for some one containing they're favorite songs from any source.I have never down loaded music but because of the music sharing that my friends and I do we all have quite nice CD collections. Is that piracy? I don't think so, as every one of the originals were store bought. The artists and the record companies all got what they had coming.
(just not as many times over as they would have liked!)
I promise you no one has gone hungry because of it!
That's my story and I'm stickin to it!
Thanks Pulsar that's what I thought...

Yeah, that's my feeling. The artists are already so damn rich so they don't need the extra money, and I don't need to give them the extra money. I'll stick to the good 'ol Limewire for now.
