Computer won't shutdown properly

I installed an DVD writer recently and it was working fine up until a couple days ago. Whenever I want to shutdown, the screen turns off like normal. Then it seems like the DVD writer kicks back in and I don't get the usual "OK To Turn Off Computer". What is goin on? Should I try and install it's new firmware?
