It looks OK, and seeing how it can play backups, it doesnt seem all too bad. Is it worth it and if not, why or why not?

depends what you expect of it and what you compare it with.
I have used it and loved it, but that was compared to swapping out using Action Replay software which was very tricky to do consistently.
I now have HD Advance and a HDD installed which I find is even better, and it saves use of the laser.
Many love the flexability of a modchip.
In summary, if you don't want to spend too much, get SMagic.
If you can spend more get HDA
(or a Modchip if you don't mind sending your console away or are competant in doing it yourself.) (and I mean [competant])

Harddrive advance doesn't work with slim ps2. You will need USB Extreme disc to make it work with the slim ps2. However, not all games will work with it.... HDA is better... more games and load faster than USB extreme one. You will need External HD and USB disc to make it work. HDA, you will need harddrive(not the external one) network adapter and HDA DISCS(FOR PS2 FAT one only)and fliptop cover or slide card.Slide card might mess up the tray though. just search around for more infos. ok?
I dont like usb external disc 75 percent games work on it. waste of money really.
Swap disc works best for both slim and big ps2.
You will need ghost magic or fliptop for slime ps2.
If you using US ps2, buy US version of Swap disc.
If you want to use external hd with USB method, buy USB disc US version(if your ps2 is US model).
Blah blah just search, dont be lazy.

in my humble opinion, Swap Magic is a piece of crap.
Yes it will work with one other mod needed, and load most back ups fine. But has too many drawbacks like no DVD9 support, doesn't work well with cheat discs, have to patch and rebuild some games, have to remove dummy files from some games, has screen cut off when playing games from other regions.
A mod chip (a good one at least) Like DMS4 Pro or Matrix Infinity will have none of those problmes. Yes it will cost more up front but over the long run it will pay for itself.
You get free upgrades with those chips too, with swap magic it means buying a new set of discs.

I got a fliptop and Swap Magic for xmas and my PS2 has seen more action in these 4 months then it had the years ive had it.
I used it to get the Mem Card Exploit going and an HDD.
I play most games off HDD< but the few that dont work, swap like a dream.
For the money it costs, technically playing and enjoying ONE game it pays itself off.
I havent hit an instance where I NEEDEd to rebuild a game. But since I put em on my hdd, I often rebuild and remove dummy files just to take up less space on my hdd.
And big deal on DVD9 games. Theres only a handful, and would it REALLY hurt that bad to perhaps get them legit in those rare instances?
Even them I believe I can winhiip to my hdd so I win in most cases.

the only reason you have not run into a game you NEEDED to rebuild is because you do it with every game. Although that is a good practice to use most people do not, so they waste discs trying to get a game to work that needs to be rebuilt or have dummy files removed.
i have seen so many posts here about DVD9 games, yes there are only a few but some are games that everyone seems to want (GT4, God Of War, Champions Of Norath). And a swap magic user has to rip out parts of the game just to shrink it down to single layer DVD5
people can say what they want but i could sit here all day and list the reasons that a modchip is better than Swap Magic. And it would all be from both fact and personal experience as i have both a V7 with fliptop and Swap Magic and a V12 with a DMS4 Pro chip

I have swap magic 3.6 and a 300 gb hardrive full w/ games.- I need to swap discs to boot up a version of HD loader I downloaded off the internet (has a final fantasy Girl on boot- and is in French I think?) - I also have the orginal HD loader but I don;t use it since it is version 1.0 (>127GB only). It does suck having to do the swap trick everytime u change games - and my ps2 is not very pretty now.
Problem is ..My setup works for now so I use it- even though I know there are better options out there. I grew tired of trying to make a memory card exploit work so I gave it up - I was going to buy HD Advance (but I changed my mind because I saw other posters blast it for being a rip off of HD Loader -which they said you can burn for free w. swap magic) so instead I got the swap magic discs.
I do like the fact you have both a CD and DVD boots disc in case you want to load a Homebrew or Burned CD Disc - as well as the DVD boot for Backup DVDs (of which I have none because I still don't have a DVD Burner!)
I've heard HD Advance is not compatible with HD Advance Drives (Boot sectors are different) otherwise I would switch now - I had no idea it supported DVD9 tho - which sounds good (GT4, God of War, Tekken 5 some of my favorite games. My version of HD loader does support a ton of games though.. even most new ones including Black .. however I am too lazt to try patching titles like Kingdom Heart 2...
Overall Swap Magic Does work - but its not the best option - In retrospect I would have paid more to have a better option initally - alas that was not the case.
PS. Actually.. If anyone could help me I would be willing to pay to get a working version of HD loader (newest Version) on a Memory Card (eg Exploit)..I have swap magic Already so if someone has a CD that for sure will work w/ my HD and an old PSX game - please e-mail me!
Newbie, like games, got magic swap 3.6
