I had SM once. its very straight forward and the slide card is'nt difficult to use.
I think the only thing to appreciate with the slide tool is where and what it actually locates on in the ps2 tray mechanism. You will need to carefully remove the front dust cover (permanently) from the actual tray. I think there is a screw at one end. Then look under the tray and you will see a white peg just right of centre when the tray is shut. The slide tool hooks this peg and moves it fully to the right side allowing the tray to be opened with your fingers. When you swap with your back-up, and push the tray closed again you slide the peg back to the left where it was. You should have a play with doing this with the PS2 switched off and in your hands. Once you've grasped that concept its all quite simple to do for real.

I now use Hdadvance which I like even more over SM.

Swap Magic is a fine start. It will work fine. Slidecards are a pain but if you get the slidecard pro that guides you it should be a bit easier. Swap Magic has it's drawbacks for sure, but everyone seems to choose it as it is what they think is the cheapest way to go, but in the long run it is not.
A good aftermarket fliptop is much better than the slidecard method but will require you to open the PS2 to install it.

Just make sure when using Swap Magic that you search the posts for a game title before you try backing it up, because if the disc is DVD9 you will have some work to do before buring it, also some games have dummy files that will need to be removed and you will have to rebuild the ISO, some games may need patching as well.
I would say that 95% of then will be a strait up copy, but searchj first and save yourself money on burned DVD's that will not work.

A good modchip installed (DMS4 Pro or Matrix Infinity)
is hands down the best way to play back ups, it has none of the above problems, can play DVD9 back ups fine, no patching, no rebuilding, no problems playing both PAL & NTSC games with no screen cut off, no problems loading back ups with cheat codes from AR Max, has free flash upgrades about 1-2 times a year that will upgrade the chip with new features and fixes, (DMS4 Pro) can use a hard drive with your PS2 and have no need for additional programs like HD Loader.

i am sure there are things i forgot but that is enough for now.
