Why burn 4x or less?

Why does burning slower increase playability of a movie backup? I would've just thought it would be all ok if there was simply no buffer underrun, meaning the burner outpaced the resources of the computer, and that would be indicated by when the bar dips to 0% buffer.
Insert standard apology for being a newb.

I never burn that slow .. I burn 8x media at 8x and 16x media at 8x-12x ...

last time i sifted through alot here 4x was being recommended as the upper limit burning speed for highest compatibility on stand alone dvd players. and anything faster was being treated as a source of errors.

slower burning decreases errors. i usually burn at 8x and have no problems. i use verbatim 16x dvd +r and sony 8x DVD+R made in japan. both of these are found easily where i live and they put them on sale alot. for games i would recomend 2.4 or 4x only, music i usually burn at 24x. burning at 16x causes more crc read errors for me so i stick to alittle slower speed. out of 10 dvds that i burn at 16x, i will usually have atleast 1 or 2 that have crc errors, but almost all of them play fine on my stand alones.

Used to be rule of thumb was to burn at half the write speed of the media. But media has gotten better and if you are using the good media and your burner is running fine, fw up to date, then burn at 8X. I do with no problems.

I followed that 4X Rule for some time, then experimented and have had no trouble burning at 1/2 rated speed or even higher--using only TY's and Verbatim--did have an issue with some Ricoh, now exclusively burn only the former.Just my 2 cents--

I can burn anywhere from 2X - 16X with my current drive, but I've come to conclusion that if I burned anywhere via 4X - 8X, then I'll have a better quality score than burning at top speed (16X) in results.
Perhaps, it's just my rig, but it is up-to-date with the latest firmware and I "only" use genuine YUDEN000T02, MCC003/MCC004 and Hitachi MAXELL "made in japan" and nothing else. I've done some experiments burning at 16X using MCC004, they all burned successfully and played fine, however, I'm not really satisfied with the quality scores when scanning using Nero CD-DVD Speed.
In contrast, it all boils down to the individual's preferences and or choice because we're all entitled to our judgment and experiences, so use whatever speed(s) you're more confident at burning.

I agree I burn at 4X on my old NEC, it does not go any higher and 8X on my Plextors. Although they are capable of 16X and the burns come out fine, I just feel more comfortable with the 8X or lower I never worry about watching to find out how they came out cause I know they did. Of course I use only TY's and Verbs with the occasional MIJ Sony or Maxell so the media quality is always reliable.

With my BenQ drives .. I get the best results burning YudenT02 media at 8x, burning MCC003 at 8x and burning MCC004 at either 8x or 12x (depending on what QScan tells me) ...
The MCC004 media is very inconsistent as far as what QScan tells me about the quality .. out of 50, maybe 10-15 can be burned at 12x and the rest have to be burned at 8x ... it is becoming rare lately to find a MCC004 that will score 16x on a QScan ... when the 004 media first came out, I think that the quality was much higher ...
And the newer SonyD21 ... yuck! .. the D11 could easily be burner at 8x and lots of it could burn at 12x .. now the D21 ... lots of it won't even burn worth a plug nickel at 8x .. and even my LiteOn LVW5005 recorders hate it ...

i have a couple hundred 2.4 +disks and using a old hp200e external burner,from the good old 321 studio days..when a price of a burner was over 300 dollars..burner still works..
the burn is 22 min,movies come out greatttttttt.

I expermented with 8x & 16x burns...but i foud that burning at 4x is the best...its like a production line to me if boxes are coming down the line at a 1000mph and you're trying to fill them...you're going to make tons of mistakes whereas if they coming down the line at a slower speed(4x) the chances of errors are almost obselete.

Man, I just picked up 100 of these last night. Verbs. I hope that I get decent quality out of them. I will be burning them on a 1650 at 8x. Makes me think that I may want to consider become strictly a TY guy more like doc! :)

The Verbatim discs don't get along with my DW1655/1650 burner .. my DW1640 is better with them .. I have a LiteOn SOHW1633s that burns 'em pretty well at 8x also ... Even though they're rated at 16x, burn 'em at 8x
All in all so far .. the DW1655/1650 doesn't get results as good as my DW1640 ... might just be me

I got to admit those MIT -R Sony disks and my Plex's do not get, it does fine on the +R. I really think that the Plex does better with +R media although they have no problems with -R Verbs and TY's but then none of my burners or my DVD recorders do either.
