My question to you is, do you want to print your pictures or just do digital slide shows. If you want to print keep in mind that the higher the megapixel the larger the print but just for digital slide shows 5.0 megapixel is just right. But do make sure you are getting a quality lense on that Camera. Do some homework first before going to the sales person to buy. :)

As knc said, make sure to get a quality camera. Many cameras claim to have however many pixels, but when processed, the images are far from the megapixel claim. If you're printing out 4X6 at most, 2-3 megapixels should work fine, but remember, from a reputable brand like Canon or Sony.

Most cameras these days are about 5 megapixels anyway, which is good for 8X10 photos and a little larger. I would recommend one of the newer Sony's, don't forget the memory card.

5mp should be fine..
SD450. great camera.

and "quality pictures"
that could be subjective. what one person thinks is very good.. the other may not.

Is optical zoom better than digital zoom for camera, because I know it is for Camcorders

yeah optical is better than digital. digital just cuts of the ends of the pic, losing quality. it basically magnifies the pic.

The amount of megapixels just makes your picture bigger. Optics is more important. If you have 6 Mpixels and some shitty chinese plastic lenses, you have BIG screenful of shit ^_^

Optical zoom is ofcourse better

yea 3.2 MP is good enough for most basic or slightly advanced users. If you want VERY good pictures with like amazing resolution even when zoomed up for a cheap price, i like the Sony Cybershot W-50. It is around $250, Very slim, big LCD, and 6.1 MP. Thats probably the best deal for that price!

I am content with my 4-year-old Sony Mavica CD350 3.2 megapixel camera. Suits my needs fine! Plus, I love the fact that it burns directly to mini CD!!! I have been using the same 3 mini CD-RWs since I bought the camera...

EDIT: Out of curiousity, I just googled my camera to see if any vendors still sold it. It's more expensive now than it was when I bought it 4 years ago!!!
