Hi, just joined the forum.
It's two o'clock in the morning and I'm pretty much not in the best mood to scour the board for answers, but I just wanted to know why my DVDShrink-ed backup copy won't play on my DVD player? I have a Toshiba SD-V290 and it supports DVD-R (which is the media I used to burn my movie on). I also used Nero to write onto the disc. What must've gone wrong?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

What type of media did you use? Your DVD player may play DVD-R media, but the brand of media means a lot. Some players are picky with brand names.
Also, for future reference you might want to buy some good DVD+R media and booktype them to DVD-ROM if your burner supports this function. If you booktype your backups to DVD-ROM, they should play in any DVD player.

I'm with Dakotafan on this one. Sounds like a media issue. Also be sure that your drives firmware is up-to-date, you can check it at the manufacturers website. What speed are you burning at? Sometimes faster burn speeds cause playback problems, especially on crappy media!
MS Windows XP MCE SP2, Intel P4 3.20 GHz, 2.0 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce FX5600, Seagate 7200 rpm 200GB HDD, Sony SDMHS93 19" LCD, Field Value
Audio Adapter Creative SB0317 Audigy LS Sound Card, Liteon models,SHM-165H6S, 167to6c, All burns exclusively on genuine Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim media!

Thanks for the replies, guys.
I used a brand called "Teon", which I guess you can consider generic. It's capable of write speeds up to 8x. I think Nero defaults to that speed, too. So I guess it's a case of cheap media being overwhelmed? But I can play the DVD on my computer, just not on my standalone DVD player. I have another batch of "Staples" brand media - just not sure if those will work, either.
I'll try burning at a slower speed - see if that makes a difference. But other than that I don't have to get other decrypters/programs/etc.?
P.S. I have to learn more about booktyping.
P.P.S. And also, I have a BENQ DVD writer... have to check for firmware updates, too.

Cmags!!! Staple's runs sales on these once or twice a year.SLow the burn speed down to 4x or lower.
Very low on the quality ladder. Benqs will burn anything, but stand alones can pick apart those backups on low quality media.
Also: Benq's highly favor the plus format. They'll burn either, but the dash format backups from benq drives have a lower compatability rate.
Even though your toshiba player says it plays dash,it can still be sensitive to media quality and the dash backups from your benq. It may play dash from other burners like pioneer or nec, just may not like the dash backups from your benq.
Make sure your benq plays it's own backups. Play one on your pc using the benq DVD-RW drive. It should look near perfect. If it does, your backup is OK!
I've got 4 benqs and play my backups on a slew of players. The plus format/booktyped to dvd-rom kicks ass compared to the dash backups.Your burner definitely can booktype-plus format only to dvd-rom,and I have some links for you for this task. Booktyping fools dvd drives into thinking they are actual dvd-rom format, the most universal of all dvd formats. Perfect remedy for that no disc inserted error.
What's the model# of your benq and current firmware?
I take it you get a no disc error on that toshiba?
What other programs besides Nero are you using for your backup process?
Also tell us how and what you are backing up.
