HI, I AM WRITING FROM AUSTRALIA. I HAVE FOUND THAT DUAL LAYER DISCS ONLY COME IN PLUS R FORMAT AND FROM WHAT I HEAR A LOT OF DVD PLAYERS DONT LIKE THE PLUS R FORMAT, MY PLAYER IS THE BEST PART OF 8 YEARS OLD NOW. CAN ANYONE PASS ON THEIR EXPERIENCES REGARDING THIS MATTER PLEASE BECAUSE IF I CAN BUY THEM CHEAP ENOUGH YOU CAN BACKUP AN ENTIRE MOVIE WITHOUT LOSS OF QUALITY.
ALSO WHERE IN AUSTRALIA , BRISBANE CAN YOU BUY JAPANESE MADE DVD'S AND CD MEDIA AS I HAVE BEEN TOLD ON THE FORUM THESE ARE BY FAR THE BEST QUALITY.
REGARDS TO ALL

fredboy:
What's the brand name and model # of your DVD-RW drive?
That model# will tell us the burner quality, and booktyping capability.
What program/s are you going to be using for those DL backups?
Most of the 16x dl drives handle the plus format only for DL media. Some of the newest drives will handle both formats of DL media. The Dash dl media is harder to find.
I haven't seen japanese DL media. The best stuff is made in Singapore for Verbatim +r DL.
Quote:FROM WHAT I HEAR A LOT OF DVD PLAYERS DONT LIKE THE PLUS R FORMAT
Stand alone players do some weird stuff when it comes to playing backups. DL media may even be trickier? I know rw media is a lot trickier than r media on stand alone player compatability. They can even be sensitive to backups from certain burners.Meaning-it may play the dash format from a pioneer burner, but not the dash format of a benq backups.
Best thing is to use the +r DL media, and booktype them to dvd-rom.This has the highest compatability rate.
If no booktyping capability, then you probably have a 50-50 shot at that player playing either -r DL or +r DL.
Worst case scenario: Drive replacement.
You have a very old stand alone player. You may have to find an el cheapo player for those dl backups?
If your drive has no booktyping cabability, then a new DVD-RW drive may be in order.Make sure it can booktype, and is a very good quality burner. Lots of burners out there for as little as those el cheapo players. Benq and lite-on have some quality drives, with a low budget price.
