I am not new at backing up dvds and I am having a problem across the board (all dvds I try). Every dvd I try to backup goes thruogh without a hitch, but then when I try to play it it skips/stalls. I rip the dvd with dvd decrypter, I run them through VOBblanker, I then run it through dvd shrink with the greatest amount of quality assurance, set at 4x burn speed and the dvd size custom set to 4.2g and then 4.1g. Tried both with and without anydvd in the background, burning with nero. I've tried reinstalling shrink and that didn't do it. I'm really hoping it isn't my burner. Does anybody have any ideas?

First of all, what brand/manufacturer DVD media are you using?
Next, what is the make and model of your burner?
And, why are you using so many programs? I've found that the simplest way is usually the best way ... Using DVD Decrypter to rip, DVD Shrink to compress, and again with the DVD Decrypter to burn is a tried and true method that has been a staple method for countless people throughout the years ...

I am using memorex DVD-R, and my burner is an atapi dual layer burner. I've been using DVD Decrypter for ripping and DVD Shrink and Nero for burning for at least a year now, and AnyDVD for most of a year because of certain copy protections it deals with. It is possible it is bad media I guess, but I'm pretty sure I've used memorex before.

The reason that most people here at AD discourage the use of Memorex media is because they do not manufacture their own discs .. you can, on occasion, get excellent media (if you're lucky) but lately all I've heard of is crapola with the name Memorex on it .. Get yourself some Verbatim or made in Japan Sony and you'll most likely see your problem disappear
Since you have both Nero and AnyDVD, why don't you just use Recode2 .. it is an excellent 'all-in-one' program to backup your collection

I hope your right, I'll try some new discs. I've never heard of recode. As you seem to be especially helpful (and thank you very much), would you mind telling me about it or pointing me to info on it?

So I've now tried verbatim and I still have problems. Also Nero recode, no better. Any more ideas? A friend with a good tech knowledge base suggested it might just be an issue of blowing out the burner with some canned air, do you think this will help much? Also, I can't see any specifics for my burners drivers in the device manager. It is listed as 16x8 dvd dual layer, and the manufacturer is listed as standard cd-rom drives.

Could be a copy protection issue. DVD Decrypter is no longer updated. You need to get the free version of DVDFab Decrypter from:
http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm
And possibly VOBBlanker (do a search, don't have the link handy) to add to your arsenal.
I don't use it, but many here swear by Anydvd.

Cleaning your burner's lens isn't a bad idea, so give it a good blow..LOL. Also don't put any sticky labels on the disk, it throws off its balance and could cause playback issues as well.
It's quite possible that there may be a player/media compatibility issue, to test this, try playing your backups in a friends player that may be newer with multiformat playback ability. Read the player's manual and see if the player is compatible with the media your trying to play in it (burn only to media that the manufacturer recommends).
If playback issues persist, you could try and:
1) Buy a newer player with multiformat playback ability, they're cheap and work well.
2) If your burner supports booktyping, you could try and booktype DVD+R media as DVD-ROMs to increase compatibility between media and player. Booktyping fools the player into identifying the disk as a DVD-ROM, here's some info on it;

Hey. So I'm pretty sure that my player is multiformat. The burner however, I have no idea whether or not it supports booktyping. Got any ideas of how I might figure out the manufacturer? I think my drivers are fine, but I don't know and I don't know how to look for them if I don't know who made the hardware. I've heard people talking about making sure firmware is up to date, and firmware and drivers are the same thing, right? I appreciate the help.

And so in the end I think that it is the burner. I went out and got a new one and everything is working fine. It's a shame when the problem is both the last factor checked AND the least desirable. Thanks for all the help.
