I'm new to ripping DVDs and have been experimenting but so far disappointed in the quality. I've seen DVDs ripped and the mpegs play as clear and perfect as the original DVD. I'm not getting that, nor even close to getting that.

I've tried SmartRipper, DVD Copy Plus (which uses SmartRipper, Super DVD, and Copy DVD so far, all with the same lesser quality. Video isn't as clear (looks like when you use over compress a still image as a comparison), sound will sometimes have a quick break here and there in playback.

What is needed to improve the ripped quality? Is it hardware dependent? DVD ripper program? Just settings within the ripper? (although I've experimented a lot with settings and haven't seen any visual changes).

Any advice is appreciated. I'm not talking about the burning stage at all, just the quality of the mpeg that you create. If the quality isn't there, it certainly won't improve on the burning stage.

If you rip a DVD in IFO Mode you end up with .VOB .BUP .IFO files that are ready to either burn or author/compress & burn to a DVD-R

I use Smartripper 2.41 or DVD Decrypter 3.1.6

Stop messing about w/ MPEG's you might get better quality : )

How exactly have you been ripping using Smartripper ??

P.S. You can of course use DVD Decrypter ISO read & then ISO write if the files are under 4.36Gb
I only use ISO Mode for backing up PS2 games myself.

Several reasons I want mpg: one, I don't have a dvd burned (very minor detail, heh); second, I also want mpgs for now even if I did have a dvd burner.

I have an older screensaver made up of mpgs from a movie and I'd like to create more like that. Those mpgs are excellent quality, they look like the dvd playing, sound and video are perfect. But the quality of the mpgs I come up are obviously cheap copies and noticeably so.

First I use SmartRipper (same version you have) to create the IFO file. Then used Dvdx to turn the IFO into an mpg file.

I will be getting a dvd burner in the near future, shopping around now for a good one. But as I said, I still want to make some mpgs from the movies, but not if there's no way to improve the quality.

I'm getting much better quality now using SmartRipper, then DVD2AVI, then finally TMPGenc.

However, the .mpg files are too elongated (top to bottom). I'm pretty certain it's turning out that way from the initial rip with SmartRipper, and I don't see a way to correct that or any settings to change it.

The other problem is that the .mpg turns out quite dark compared to the original DVD, but excellent quality otherwise.

How can I correct the proportions of the rip so it's as the original movie, and brighten up the .mpgs some?
