How can I determine what type of dvd drive I have? I recently burned some discs to transfer from a old computer to a new computer, but the dvd's refuse to work on the new one, yet they play fine on my old computer?

What format are you using? If the new computer is -R or +R only then that might be your problem. The way you tell is to go to "control panel", click "system", then the "hardware" tab, then "device manager".
This will open up the devices in your system and you can click on them and then right click and choose "properties" to get the info on each. Once you have the info about the drive you can google it to learn anything you ever wanted to know.

Ok, so determine if this new computer's drive is compatible with +R. If it works in one and not in the other, this is the first thing to check.

Er... how do I go about doing that? I've read you can use something associated with Nero to check, but, do I need to buy the program and use a utility? I know this site has a Nero Rom or something like that, would that work?

Like I explained above go to "control panel", "system" etc until you get to the device manager. In there you'll be able to see exactly what kind of drive you have. Once you have the name and model you can use google to easily find your drive and it's specs including what kinds of discs it can read and write.
