Consolidation of Video files on DVD

All you experts our there, need help.
I have lots of AVI,MPEG,ASF, etc of Bill Maher.'
They play fine, but would like to consolidate them all on a DVD that I can play on my Sony DVD player. The other DVD I make I use the VOB,IFO,BUP files.
I think I have found converters for all the formats. How do I create a "menu" on the DVD to choose which I want to play like a reg movie on DVD?
And, is converting each AVI,ASF, etc to VOB,IFO the best way to do it before authoring it?
What is the easiest software that I can get to "menu" the DVD?
