NEC 1300A Drive No Longer Recognizes -R Discs

Had this problem (drive not recognizing valid medium) once before and was able to solve it (if
Memory serves) by deleting the ATA and Drive drivers. Didn?t work this time.

Situation is: Drive does not recognize a valid medium format (DVD-R). Problem occurred after attempting backup of AEONFLUX yesterday. Problem continues with any attempt on any .iso file using ?R medium. Writes fine to +R format. About half way thru a 50 stack. Have tried others from another 50 stack with no luck.

Any suggestions to fix the problem would be appreciated.

I had this problem with a NEC 2500 mounted in an external enclosure. It would burn +R but not -R. I never could figure out why. I switched external enclosures and it worked just like new.

I assume DMA is enabled for the drive?

Try uninstalling by disconnecting the cables, power and comm, from the drive and restart the system. Them power down. Reinstall the dive by reconnecting the cables. Restart.

If you have another IDE cable available, install that as well.

The 1300 is a bit long in the tooth so if nothing works out, you might consider spending the $40 for a new burner or just burn +R media which is all I ever burn now anyway. Good luck.

Basically your drive is old and only capable of burning to the following discs -

4.0x DVD+R
2.4x DVD+RW
4.0x DVD-R
2.0x DVD-RW

Those Sony discs you mention are 16x -R and while it would appear that the firmware recognises them i suspect it's just not happy using them even at the burner/discs lower speeds as they're probably just too new for this burner
