Where are these AVI coming from? Probably a downloader, eh? Is it really the disc or is it the files? I ask because there are plenty of avis floating around that are not DivX or XviD which standalone players support. Put those on a disc and you get a blank screen when you play it, and then it stops.
If it really is the discs, what is the manufacturer? Are the ones that work -R and the ones that fail to work +R. That's a common error people make. Have you scanned any of the failed discs to check out the burn quality? Perhaps they are just unreadable to your player due to errors.
There, a few things to consider. If I've gone off in the wrong direction on you, please post more info about your situtation by answering my questions.

Probably the #1 error .. a very common error is using low grade media ... and, are you booktyping +R discs? That is essential for maximum compatibility ...

hi thanks for replying.well first of have to admit that i am a novice so please bare with me if some of my answers seem stupid.dont think its the files that i have downloaded because there are two types of discs that are playing eveything and they are "imation"dvd+rw and the disc that came with player which does not even have a name.the only discs ive used are "imation"dvd+rw which are fine with every burn copy but the "imation"dvd+r there is nothing, and also "datawrite"dvd+r there is nothing. the make and model of the player is "silvercrest" kh 6508/kh 6509.....

re300370, I've never heard of your player but I do have the Philips DVP642, which also plays DivX/Xvid files. Though the player isn't all that particular about media I have had it fail to play some .AVI files that have been burned onto crappy RW discs. What I now do is make sure that I always burn the files onto either Verb or TY blanks, preferably +R/RW format, though -R/RW work, too. Provided I do that I never have a problem, unless the .AVI files themselves are bad (QPEL encoding, etc.). In short, use the same type of media you'd use if you were burning a regular dvd-video disc and expecting it to last.

Data write and Imation has some crappy manufacturers for majority of their format. You're doing ok with the RW's,but going to the +r-you will have a different MID code on them.

First thing to do is try getting some quality media. For the plus format,my specialty- Go with taiyo yuden or verbatim. If you buy it locally,no verbatim is on sale this week-maybe sunday?.Best Buy has sony on sale,ok-but there is better stuff out there for that same price when they go on sale. Avg $15 per spindle of 50 when on sale.

For the plus R format: The plus format of maxell and sony are pretty good.Look at the spindles for the ones that say made in Japan, and you'll even be better off. Japanese fuji are very good, taiwanese fuji not so fortunant.

Some picky stand alones will give issues on crappy media. Beware of memosux/TDK/HP/Philips/JVC.

I'm a novice when it comes to XviD,but playback is playback. Definitely switch to some better stuff and see if that playback improves.

What's the brand name and model# of your DVD-RW drive?

What's the exact issue with those +R media? No disc/dirty disc/wrong region/or wrong format type of error on that DivX player? Meaning: It isn't recognizing your backups?

That no disc error:

+rw plays ok,but not +r. It's usually the other way around. Catfreak mentioned booktyping, but I'm not sure if your drive is capable of it. Booktkyping gets rid of the majority of no disc inserted errors.

Next guess would try some quality +r media like I mentioned in my previous post. I've seen that error on picky players when they wouldn't accept the backups that were on crap media.

Will that packard bell DVD-RW drive play your +r and +rw backups on your pc?

See how that burner plays both +r and +rw and see what happens.
