re the booktyping on this drive, DVD+R and
DVD+R DL can be easily set to DVD-ROM booktype with CDSpeed, DVD Decrypter and from Nero Burning Rom. here's some pictures that will help, see page 23 of this - http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Print.aspx?ArticleId=12429

ps the firmware A103 is old now, latest is A106 - http://lgodd.lge.com/fwdrv/DVD-WRITER/GSA4163A106.exe (approx. 1.5MB)

sukhvail: Those maxell ricohs are the older 4x speed. I haven't seen any of them on sale in over a year.

Very good media. I've burned 100's of the maxell ricohs. All the maxell +4x media I have burned has coded as Ricohjpn-r01 and I've used just about every different package quantity: 3pk/5pk/10pk/15pk/20pk/25pk/and 50pk. Always saying Made in taiwan and coded as ricohs.

Now if you get into the maxell +8x,majority of these are Ritek-r03 and you'll love these. These +8x maxells will kick the crap out of those 4x ricohs-performance wise.

If you find the japanese packs/spindles of these +8x speed rate, they will yield Hitachi's! Maxell-002-00 and are some of my favorite.

Definitely booktype those babies. You'll have the highest compatability rate with the booktyped backups.

thanx for your input. ye i bought that pack a year ago and i bought a sony spindle afterwards and found 5 or 6 empty ones left. the next dvd's im going to buy will be verbaitm. ive heard excellent things about them on this site so im going to give them a shot.

one more question: can you booktype a dvd after its been burnt and played in a standalone or is it too late?

Nope-too late, once it has started to burn-it's already set to whatever it was to start with: Dash or plus.

The booktyping is set at the beginning of the backup. That's what fools those players into thinking they are the actual pressed in dvd-rom format.

Do you have some dvd drives that won't recongize your plus backups?

Once you get it set correctly to booktype, you may be able to re-rip them onto another disc that is set as booktyped. Your dvd reader will have to be able to recognize them to start with.

Verbatim are sweet. I know the +8x verbs are a heck of a lot better than the older 4x ones. These 16x verbs are also very good.
