okay, folks. this one's been a thorn in my side for a long time. here's the story:
we have a large volume of licensed videos for a project that we're converting to a number of different formats. so far, we've been using flaskmpeg to convert to mpeg, then using vegas video 3/4 to convert the mpegs to xvid (i believe one of nic's builds of xvid was used). we wanted the resulting *.avi files to be easily playable, so we tested them on some 'fresh' machines running new installs of win XP and they played just fine with the native version of media player and the regular codecs.
here's the problem: something got hosed on my computer this week and i started getting the error 'no compatible codec' or something to that effect when i was trying to render the xvid movies. so, i uninstalled the codecs and reinstalled the latest build of nic's xvid, but now my resulting movies have that green interference all over them.
i read in another post that deleting the file ffdshow.ax in the \windows\system32 directory can help that problem, so i renamed my file and, sure enough, it plays back just fine.
Here's the REAL problem:
every computer i've tested my new *.avi files on has had the same problem. they also all played the files just fine when i renamed their ffdshow.ax files. but we really can't expect every prospective viewer to go through this process.
does anyone know the root of this problem or can someone explain the problem? like i said, i can't have every single person that visits our site make this modification to their system, so i need to get back to where i was when the xvid movies i was making would play on "the average joe's" computer with no modification.
sorry about the length, but it's sort of a particular kind of problem.
thanks!
