Smartripper and burning DVD's (noob question)

I have backed up several DVD's with DVD2ONE, but my question is:

I rip a 3.4 gig movie with smartripper, I take Nero and burn the ripped files in the Video folder. As far as I can tell my DVD's work just fine with just a rip and then burn. Anybody tell me a reason why I shouldnt use this to backup movies instead of DVDXCOPY on movies that will fit on 1 DVD?
I have tested the movies on 3 DVD players (apex, toshibia, and a Samsung) and it works fine. But before I start doing this all the time I wanted to hear if i was doing something that was going to bite me in the A$$ at a later date.

Shoey, have been taking your advice seriously regarding chickenman's guide.. cdfreaks.... but can't get a copy od dvd maestro anywhere... any suggestions or alternatives
