Hello all, Dummy here. Is there significant improvement in quality when burning at slower speed? I've read posts that suggest burning at 4 or 6. I have never altered or set my burn speed thus far, so I'm assuming that I'm burning backups at 16x. I haven't had any problems with any of my backups playing. Will they degrade over time? (degrade faster?) Should I just leave well enough alone and not tamper with my current setup which is as I say default. (I am the DVD Backup Newbie Poster Kid)

Sony DRU-820A Dual Layer DVD+-R +-RW RAM
AnyDVD
DVD Decrypter
DVD Shrink
Nero 7
Memorex Media

Generally, I have AnyDVD run in the background. I then used Decryter, followed by Shrink. I haven't tried Narnia or Hostel or many of the DVD's that others are having difficulties with, (they just aren't my trip) but I am sure that a future backup will have some more intense protection.

Anything I know about backups I've learned here. Any input with regards to these questions would be appreciated.

A good rule of thumb is not burn in excess of 1/2 the rated speed of the media. There are exceptions of course. Some never burn in excess of 4X period. We're talking single layer media here.

Memorex is really crappy media. Good quality media are Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, and Made in Japan labeled Sony and Fuji disks.

It's also a good idea in authoring programs like DVD Shrink, Nero Recode, etc. to set the size of DVD5 (single layer) media to a custom size of 4300 or 4350. This prevent burning to the outer edge where dyes thin and other manufacturing defects are more likely to occur.

AnyDVD is often so good that one can use DVD Shrink directly to rip the main title from the DVD bypassing DVD Decrypter ripping entirely.
