Cannot write disc at once

Ok... I'm trying to backup my dvd collection and I'm having some problems. Every time I try to burn the iso I've created It says "Cannot burn disc at once". I used DVDfabdecryptor to rip it, dvdshrink to re-encode, and imgburn to create an iso. I'm using Nero 7 Premium to burn it. I usually like trying to figure these things out on my own... but I feel like I'm banging my head against a wall. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Fallion,
Output an iso file from DVD Shrink and use ImgBurn to burn that file to the DVD.
There are links to guides for backing up DVDs in my signature below.
Use good quality media like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, and Made in Japan labeled Fuji and Sony disks. Limit your burn speed to no more than 1/2 the rated speed of the media.

Thanks... I'll try that.. Oh and if it helps, I tried burning in imgburn and it wouldn't work either. First error after "Writing LeadIn" was "Failed to write Sectors 0-31-Unknown(0X91, 0X25)"
I'll let you know how it works with dvdshrink.iso.
Oh... btw, Thanks for such a speedy reply!

Nope... still no dice. I tried the iso with dvdshrink and dried to burn with imgburn. Same errors. Here's the log.

Go ahead and post the Nero log. Be sure to delete your name and program serial number before posting. Only post the last section that begins with the heading Nero Burn Log and your name and serial number.
Part of your problem is the media. CMC Mag is among the worst media there is imo.
At what speed did you attempt to burn?

I think I might have found the problem. I've read in several places that I need to make sure I have my dma enabled. I thought I had done so by checking the device manager but it looks like I didn't? Well here's the log and I'll see if I can turn it on.

Ok... I tried to turn the dma on but the transfer mode in the device settings for my burner, it already says it is enabled.
I've tried checking and unchecking "Let BIOS select transfer mode" and both ways show dma off in nero. I've deleted the "Nvidia nForce4 Parallel ATA controller" and allowed it to be reinstalled and still the same. Any clues to what I'm doing wrong?

Ok... maybe I was wrong about it being dma. I tried playing a dvd in my dvd 16x8 dual drive and it won't play. It plays data cd's fine but won't recognize a dvd. When I insert a dvd into the drive it changes under the "my computer" screen from "DVD dual(E:)" drive to "CD Drive (E:).
Whenever I try to manually open the dvd drive I get the error "E:\ is not accessable. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."
Anyone got any ideas?

Normally the optical drives are on the Secondary Channel and the hard drives are on the Primary. The HDD you boot from should be the Master on the Primary Channel. I'd also move the DVD drive to Master and put the CD at Slave (on the Secondary Channel). Not sure if that's the problem, but that's the normal configuration. I'm also wondering why you feel the need to create an ISO image when you are burning with Nero. ISO is a universal format for most burners and necessary for use with the likes of DVD Decrypter and ImgBurn, but not necessary with Nero. Also, DVD Shrink can build an ISO image if you want one and burn it with a supported burner. You're just adding more steps than necessary which makes it difficult to pinpoint where your problems come in. Once you get your drives configured properly, try doing an encode with Shrink and letting Nero automatically burn the output. If that fails, then record the files to the hard drive and make sure they're playable there. If the Shrink output is good and it usually is, your problem is simply in the burning, either technique or a flaw in the hardware or software.
DVDFab Decrypter is a good freebie and necesassary for some of the new copyright protections. Simply open those files in Shrink and when the Backup window opens, make the right choice for burning, either create the ISO file or ISO file and burn or simply burn the output through Nero automatically. Burning with Nero is the simplest process since you already have the app. ddlooping has some handy guides at http://www.dvdshrink.info/ . They may not be completelely updated, but they will still show most of the steps you need to follow. Just remember to click the quality settings if you have a big movie with compression needed greater than 15-20%.

Ok... heres an update. I have a hardware problem. My dvd +-rw dual layer drive will not recognize or play a dvd. It plays audio cd's, and data cd's. Nero infotool shows that it does recognize dvd media. (I put in a burned dvd in and it recognized that it was a DVD-R but it showed it as blank media.)

I figured it might help so I switched the drives around... and still the same thing.
I was tired of going through several steps and having the steps fail at the end. That's why I created the ISO. It's a much faster process to repeat.

If you notice, DVD Shrink can both create the ISO and use DVD Decrypter to burn it. DVDD is free and does a good job. ImgBurn is merely the updated version of the ISO write from DVDD with more bells and whistles. It can also just create the ISO. The options are self explanatory if you read them. There's no need for the extra steps you've been taking.
Seems the software may not be the problem after all from what you now say. At least now the drives are in the right configuration and you have a better starting point for finding your solution. First of all, after switching everything around, did you go into Device Manager and uninstal the Primary and Secondary Channels and reboot? That's always a good start and then recheck in Device Manager to ensure all drives on both channels are in DMA. Then get some better media. The drive you have is a known problem due to it's firmware. Is that the MicroAdvantage drive or AOpen? I didn't see a mention of the brand name for it, just the generic 16X8 DVD Dual. After doing the above, do an encode and create a Hard Disk Folder with Files and burn that with Nero, then post the new Nero log here.

Will do. But it might be a day or so. Waiting on a reply from aopen as to the exact firmware upgrade as the drive is a repackaged generic. It was made by aopen but has none of the aopen identifiers.

Ok... Update.
I Flashed the firmware from A070 to A080. (no difference)
I removed the Nvidia ATA controller and now DMA is showing on. (no difference)
I removed Alcohol 120 which caused me to have a virtual drive. (no difference)
I put each of my drives on a separate IDE cable and channel. (no difference)
I'm beginning to come to the conclusion that my drive is just screwed.

The configuration I gave you is the normal one, I'd suggest leaving things that way, making sure all jumpers are in the right position and the drives are on the right cable positions. The drive is suspect, but it's best to check things before making that call. If you have another burner drive you can swap out, that's the easy way to check a problem drive. One thing I didn't notice though was trying better media or the Nero log on a new burn attempt. The media you'll still be able to use once you get the problem solved. The log just takes a few minutes, so nothing lost. But as you said, the drive is looking suspect so far.

I'm sorry brobear... but although there may be something wrong with the media... and the burn/iso... I'm pretty sure it's the drive. I'm not trying to be a @$s or anything... and I'm sure you know lots more than I do about drives and media... but when the drive isn't working I'm gonna put my money on the drive until it can play a dvd.
I just want to say thank you to everyone that has offered suggestions, and to those that offer suggestions in the future, but I mislabled this thread because I thought my problem was an error due to software mishaps or due to my own ignorance(this still might be the case). In the interest of getting my problem solved I'm going to post it in a more appropriat forum. I'm really not sure where the drive experts are here yet and I've been kind of running myself ragged with home and work related stuff(Read: I'm open to suggestions), but I'll find the correct forum and repost and start with just the drive symptoms and maybe a redirect to this post for the full story.

Being as how I'm a betting man, I'd go with the bad drive as well. I was just curious to see if the media change and the previous suggestions would make any changes at all. At least now you have your drives in DMA, or supposed to. Had they remained in PIO (DMA OFF), you would have suffered a serious slowdown. Just remember, hard drives to the Primary Channel and optical drives (DVD/CD) to the Secondary Channel. Good luck, and while you're getting the new drive, you may as well get one with booktyping ability.
