MPGs not scaled correctly

I want to make mpegs of portions of movies from DVDs. I'm using SmartRipper, then DVD2AVI, then finally TMPGenc.

However, the .mpg files are turning out stretched out a bit too tall. I'm pretty certain (although not 100% sure) it's turning out that way from the initial rip with SmartRipper, and I don't see a way to correct that or any settings to change it.

Also the .mpgs turn out quite dark compared to the original DVD, but excellent quality otherwise.

How can I correct the scale so the .mpg is as the original movie, and brighten up the .mpgs some?

I have the same image problem, I think it has to do with the original encoding on the dvd, encoded in 16:9 but image is actually 2.35:1 which most ripping software does not recognise. This is an ongoing problem that I am trying to resolve, any suggestions.

Anybody?
