USB Advance slow load times

Tried this program out yesterday, after doing some reading. Hoping someone can help diagnose these slowdowns with me.

My hardware : slimline ps2 (v14, I think) with DMS4 (not pro) running toxic bios 1.4. hhd is a maxtor onetouch 2 300 gb usb drive. PC is a homebuilt over the hill athlon xp machine that's still got a year or so left.

I formatted the hdd using the USBExtreme windows gui. I then mounted 3 iso's in daemon tools and used the USBExtreme windows gui to transfer them to the hdd.

First, it took on average 45 mins per game. Even for a full 4.7 gb dvd, that seems slow. Are these speeds normal? Even worse, the games are slow playing off the hdd. They're noticeably slower than playing directly off the discs were.

I read on another forum that WINHIIP was faster at transferring games, so I fired that up, but it told me the hdd wasn't formatted in ps2 format...

Appreciate any help you guys can provide!

I understand that it would be faster to put a 7200 or 10000 rpm ide drive in an enclosure, but that's not an option currently...

PS2 uses USB1.1, so it WILL be slow, using a faster harddisk will help a bit... but the speed is still limited by USB
