First off this site is great! I just have a few questions about shrink however. I read through many of the forums and people use dvd decrypter and other ripping tools. I have been ripping and compressing my movies with shrink, and burning with nero 6 ultra. So far I have yet to encounter any problems(I have used imation dvd+R media) I have been happy with the copies.

My question is about the deep analysis feature! At what compression level should I use it, and is it really even necessary?? Oh and is the dvd decrypter used basically for the newer movies(arcoss protection etc) Or does it rip the copyrights faster and give better quality than shrink?

Basically I just want to know the benefits of dvd decrypter when compared to shrink, and when should I use deep analysis.Any tips to improve the quality and speed of my burns would be greatly appreciated!!

I am very new to this, and have found that this forum has help me tremendously so far. Thank you for your comments and advice.

I'm sorry I also had one more question regarding the quality settings of a full disc backup(ie:max smoothness/max sharpness etc) Is there a guideline to using one or the other based on how much compression is needed to enhance the quality??

Dvd shrink's quality enhancements:

Usually it is up to personal preference. Depends on where you view them. Highly compressed backups can show a blockiness in the background if you look carefully. The size of the TV will tell you. Larger screens, that blockiness will show up,smaller screens-it may not. That's why it's personal preference.

Use the number that DVD Shrink tells you under the compression setting. 100 is goal. That's no compression at all. The lower the number, the more compression.Example: Shrink tells you 65. This means it is being compressed at 35%.The more compression, then more likely the need for those quality enhancements.

I use the AEC enhancements of max smoothness or max sharpness.Below 25%,max smoothness. 15%-25% , Then I'll use Max sharpness. If I use those AEC enhancements, then I use the Deep analysis. It's either both or none for me.

Dvd decrypter: It's a more aggressive ripper. It'll rip some of those newer problematic encryptions, and may even get through a damaged dvd better than DVD Shrink. One bad drawback,it takes longer on those DVD-9 movies onto DVD-5 blanks using DVD Shrink. For a non compressed backup or dual layer backup, the Mode ISO read and write are very effective and quicker.

Nero and DVD Shrink are my main combination. With the newer encryptions coming out,DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink may not work, but another program will help them to rip them. It's called AnyDVD by slysoft. It's a background ripper for dvd and cd encryption, and can set your drive as region free. A very nice,non-free program, but no extra step involved for you normal backup process.

Ripping those larger DVD-9 movies and compressing them to dvd-5:

Dvd decrypter adds an extra step. You rip in file mode to harddrive, and then have to use dvd shrink/locate the ISO/and backup using your normal process. I use it for the ISO read and write for Dual layer backups/re-ripping my backups/or ripping damaged discs.DVD Decrypter may be able to rip through a crc error-damaged disc, whereas DVD Shrink has no prayer.

Using DVD Shrink to rip,you eliminate the DVD Decrypter step. Then you may have Nero to autoburn for you,so no extra step for the burn process. That's why DVD Shrink for the ripping/nero to autoburn/and enabling AnyDVD in the background for those new releases that DVD Shrink can't handle alone.

To speed up the process, try main movie only. You'll automatically decrease compression, and maybe have no compression at all.More compression, then longer backup times. Using those quality enhancements, and those backup times drastically increase-depending on your pc specs of processor speed and ram.

Imation media isn't exactly the greatest media out there. If you can get them to burn ok,and playback ok-then you're ok for now. There is a longevity factor for the low quality dye that they have.

But,other peeps with older stand alone players/and or low quality burners will have a higher chance for issues with them.Mainly stand alone players. That's the first thing to change when issues occur.Compression can also highly affect the low quality media.Compressing 6-7+ gbs onto a standard DVD-5 blank is very excruciating. Some of the low quality media will have trouble with that compression.

Just keep an eye on how your stand alone player/s that play your backups. They will tell you if something is wrong.

Thanks for all the useful information, what kind of media do you reccomend?(+ or -, brand) I have heard that sony is good, and memorex isn't so good! Once again thank you for the help, it is greatly appreciated!

Media?

You got dash and plus.It depends on what all your stand alone players/pc drives/and game consoles will handle off your actual burner. You'll probably have to try both, but make sure it is quality stuff. It depends on what your burner supports. Most burners are dual layer, but yet they still may favor a certain format. Some burners, like my benqs have bitsetting capability to booktype the plus format into dvd-rom,making my backups more compatable for stand alone players. If you got a booktyping drive, definitely the plus format. If not, then most likely the dash format. Your stand alone players will tell you which ones they like.Any format issues, then they'll give you a no disc error-so you'll have to try the opposite format.

Media quality is critical.Stand alone players can pick apart these quality issues with a bad playback. Some burner also have trouble with them.Any issues at all, this is the first thing we ask for. Memorex/sony/maxell/tdk/philips/and just about every named brand media outsources their media. This means 4 manufacturers may make media using the Memorex +8x speed of media. These manufacturers also make media for other brand names: Example: Cmags=CMC Mags: They'll make media for TDK/Memosux/Philips/HP/and a ton of other brand names. When you purchase a different pack/spindle of 1 certain brand name and same speed/format,you'll most likely change to a different manufacturer. That's why those brand names are not highly recommended. Taiyo yuden and Verbatim are top dogs, but even taiyo yuden can be faked. That's why you buy them from reputatable site.
Locally, when media goes on sale-you can find taiyo yuden made sony fuji/verbatim mitsubishi's/and maxell hitachi for the same price as you buy memosux/HP/ETC.

Taiyo yuden fuji and sony can be found on the spindles of +8x that say Made in Japan on the outer wrapper.Hitachi made Maxell can be found when you see Made in Japan. This is how I purchase my regular DVD+R media. Now verbatim, they are made in singapore/taiwan/japan/and india. Majority are taiwan and singapore, and top notch stuff. They feature Advanced Metal AZO dye, just like taiyo yuden. Higher performance, more longevity.

Japanese sony are very good, taiwanese sony are decent.Sony makes some of their media, along with taiyo yuden making some.Fuji is the exact same way. Taiyo yuden making some of theirs, and a slew of other manufurers making the rest.Issues can arrise when you switch packs. You may have been using sony/fuji tys,and next spindle could be fujifilm-03 or ritek-r03. Quite a bit of difference for fujijilm-03 in the dash 8x fujis, but not quite as much as apposed to the +8x Ritek-r03. Some brand names like fuji will contain higher quality manufacturers with the plus format, verses the dash format.

When you start burning, get some RW discs to practice with. You will wipe out a few if you use R media.

If you don't know which format to start with, try getting a small pack of maxells, but make sure they say made in japan. These come in 3/5/10/and 15 pks. Some will say japan, rest will be taiwan.Again, the plus format taiwan are very good, but not so for the dash 8x taiwanese maxells.Dash 8x has 3 different manufacturers: Hitachi/Ritek/and Cmags.Hitachi from japanese packs,ritek-which are decent and cmags from taiwan.

Test burn from both formats, and test backups on all the drives that you plan on playing your backups.Including friends/neighbors/and famility members.

Those player decide which format-Both-or even may not play them at all. They are screwy when it comes to playing backups.Go with the format that gives you the fewest no disc errors in those drives.

What's the brand name and model# for your burner and we may be able to recommend the format and brand of media?
