i have yet to actually SEE a dual layer media by Taiyo Yuden, and from what they told me, they weren't PLANNING on actually manufacturing them yet (but i'm here in the U.S., so, much like the 16x DVD+R YUDEN000T03's late arrival here, i might just be "behind again" in terms of what i can get my hands on compared to the guys in Europe/UK~ :)
based on that MID coding, i would take a guess that it's a DVD-R DL??? not a DVD+R DL...? also, where have you seen it available? i'm curious as to what others around the globe can get while here in the U.S. we can not...a link or further info would be appreciated...

hey Doc, i thought i'd seen the TYG11 somewhere, i stumbled on it whilst trying to solve the MCC004 firmware anomaly in the Benq Hall of Shame thread... anyway, here's a snippet from the cdfreaks link (http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=178570&page=2) within that Benq thread - Quote: DVD-R9 supported media types: 6
TYG11 4x,2x
- this is a snippet from the BCHC firmware for the Benq DW1650 as it happens, so TYG11 is a -R dual layer disc :)

hi creaky,
yeah, thanks for that...i posted up a few scans on Verbatim MCC003 media in catfreak's Benq hall of fame thread~ :) i think this new BCHC firmware for our 1650 has potential...juss need to "learn" the discs and then i'm sure the quality scores will improve...you can see from my scans here:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/5/330512
which i've seen u already commented on hehehe, that given some time, i think it will be just fine~ :)
as to your MCC004 inquiry, i ran out of my 16x rated Verbs DVD+R, so unfortunately, i can't try any to show you any results...all i have left at this time are the 8x DVD+R MCC003s and the 8x DVD+R YUDEN000T02s :) that IS weird how Nero doesn't recognize the media properly though, even with the new firmware (and even so with the last one BCFC)...even with SB activated, to "learn" the media, i really don't know if that would change anything, as i think it's more Nero related than anything else...interesting anomaly however...
as to the dual layer DVD-R DL Taiyo Yudens, i see that from your cdfreaks link as being supported in the firmware tables, but have YOU seen anyone use it yet? or know where you could get it? i know we here in the U.S. might be limited to what types of media are available to us, but i don't even know WHERE you could get those TYG11s from? are they available from svp? or in the UK for that matter?
despite the firmware tables for the benq1650 supporting it, that really does NOBODY any good if that particular media is not even available to anyone in the general public? also, i'm not PERSONALLY too fond of DVD-R DL, i've only used a FEW (less than 5) and i MUCH prefer the DVD+R DLs ANY DAY over the DVD-R DL~ :) most my success, at least using the Benq drive, has been on the Verbatim DVD+R DL as in my sig...my Sony, Liteon, Pioneer drives have NO PROBLEMS with the Ridata Riteks DVD+R DL though, many people have complained about them being "crappy" (i noticed how cdfreaks speaks about the ritekD01s like we over here talk about cmc-mag discs~ ) :) thought that was funny, ironic kinda...
anyways, i'd like to find out WHERE in the world those DVD-R DLs by Taiyo Yuden are found, IF it's in Japan, i could POSSIBLY get my hands on some via my uncle that lives in Tokyo~ :) (if u remember, he was the one who got me the MKM003s first, months ago, when the U.S. market only had the MKM001 Verbatim DVD+R DLs at the time) :)

Yeah I remember you had those few discs from your Uncle that you didn't want to waste. I haven't seen many dual layer disks over here. Saw some the other day in PC world -Verbs (can't remember exactly which ones, they were £40 for 10 so I didn't even look at the box, £40 - I didn't know they catered for the Sultan of Brunei's wallet lol). But I don't pay too much attention to DL stuff as I don't plan on using any. I nearly bought some single Verb DL from svp the other day but put it off as per usual. But I will probably try a few DL disks one of these days

On the link below, someone referred to TYG11 as being the "rumored" TY DVD-DL disc.
http://cdrlabs.com/phpBB/search.php?search_author=RJW&sid=b0a7487...
@Doc
I found it strange that BenQ supports this media in its new firmware release but there is no record of this MID anywhere. If you find any info on this MID, please let us know.
@creaky
Maybe I missed something in the link you posted, but I did not find any information regarding TY DL media coding to TYG11.
If Taiyo Yuden enters the DL market, that would be great. But like Doc, I prefer using DVD+ DL so that I can booktype.
