Not sure this is the right place. I'm intereted in building an external CD burner that behaves differently from
anything I can buy off the shelf, and
interface it with other devices. How can I get started? what do I need to know in terms hardware components and firmware? Thanks.

Not worth the hassle m8 as burners are quite cheap these days. I recommend the Lite-On LTR 52x (internal). Backups pc game protection (Safedisc& SecuROM) and audio protection too.
Very fast DAE and acuracy as well. "Could be" the best pound for pound burner at present, got my vote!

Shoey :)
