Hello!

I was wondering, the subwoofers you get for cars, the cones that you have to buy the carpeted boxes for, can i hook one of them up to my hifi in my room?
I dont want one of the normal indoor ones, i like the ones that go in cars.

Ideas?

What stuff would i need to do it? My hifi ahs the usual subwoofer output etc etc and all the other inputs and outputs!!

ta

Thanks ireland!![afterdawn legend]

Not a good idea, most car subs are rated at 4 ohms and are too much of a load for the most home audio amplifiers. It can be done but you would need to get a sub rated at 8 ohms or one hell of a high end home amp. rated to be stable at loads of 4 or even 2 ohms if you plan on using a 4 ohm sub.

Box is absolutely right Billyboy! They're a serious mismatch but I've got to ask, why would you even want to do such a thing? They make regular powered home subs that would knock your house off its foundation if you're into that sort of thing.

not only do the ohms not match, but car subwoofers are designed to be placed in a small enclosed are (such as a car). it is not meant to be placed in a large room with tons of air in it. so stick with subs designed for home theatre....

@billyboy...you never hear the expression "your side of the pond" LOL? I thought everone used it!...perhaps only on this side of the pond LOL!

I have some british sites on my computer at the office; I'll take a peek. As I recall, there were a number of good ones by a company called Acoustic Energy as well as Mission and I know that they sell Mirage and Klipsch in England. I did a little research for a guy a while ago and I was surprised to learn that most of the big speaker companies are different for those in the US.

I hate to get personal but what are you looking to spend?

I'll see what I can dig up when I'm at the office tomorrow. I'm not sure though billy-boy; you may have to save a bit more first. That's slicing it a bit thin.

Are you ABSOLUTELY SURE that you have a "Line-Out" to a powered subwoofer??? If not, you'll have nothing but an expensive box that merely occupies space LOL!

Yeah, gerry he might need to save up a little more, but if he were on our side of the "pond" he could actually get one for $166.00 and change!
Gerry, have you ever heard of this place http://www.parts-express.com/ they have some great deals and are located in Ohio.
I have been dealing with them for some time now.Warning! That site has the power to make you spend money!lol!!

Oh, I forgot to mention ...most powered subs also have speaker level inputs as well as line level ins.

Ah yes, but it wouldn't make much sense to buy and active and use it as a passive ... though I've actually seen and heard some awesome passives but you don't see them much these days.

I did check out that site...absolutely awesome!

Gerry, you misunderstood me.The amplifiers have speaker level inputs that convert the signal being fed to line level internally and often have an active crossover inside that you would hook your main front speakers to.
This way the sub produces the lows(with the help of it's onboard amp) and the mids and highs are passed thru to the main speakers without further amplification.

Here is one example http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=300-635

Thats what they are referring to as "high and low level inputs"

wow! YOu two are quite the experts in this area.

I oculd stretch the budget alot, it jsut takes time to save LOL! My mum wanted me to wuit my weekend job for a while until i get my exams out of the way, but i can go higher, yeh.

Boxwrench, you said that on your side of the pond oyu could get one and change. If its that much cheaper then i could get one on that side of the pond, and get someone to mail it over???

But depending on how much cheaper it is over there, the postage would probably make it up!

Thanks ireland!![afterdawn legend]

No,I think by the time the shipping costs added up you would actually spend twice as much!

Ok then. Speaking of posting abroad, i sent something to my sister and her partner in iraq (they're in the army) and it only cost 30p! Thats cheaper than sending it to my next door neighbour nearly! Its because they lowered the price because of the war for a period of time i was told. What would happen if i sent something to iraq, and he sent it to the states, i would probably quarter the cost!:P

SOrry about being off topic.

@billy...sounds a bit convoluted my boy; lets see what's in your backyard first LOL!

@box ...how are you my friend? You're right, I did misunderstand you. I think I should start reading entirely through specs rather than just go looks at wattages, crossovers and frequency responses!

if the subwoofer has a dual voice coil u could series it up with its self and it would not ruin it cause the coils are exactly the same so u could have 4ohms, 2ohms, or 8ohms
