Hi all,
Im trying to capture old 8mm/Hi8 camcorder tapes to PC and then burn to DVD for use on my home player but the quality is SH*T. skin tones end up with a green tinge and colours are generally poor.
Currently have a Hauppauge WINTV GO capture card with Win tv 2000.
The settings are;
PAL-1, frame rate 25fps, Colour/compression YVU9, Output size 384 x 288(default), Colour settings. Brightness 146. Contrast 60.
Saturation 97. Hue 128. Movies - AVI.
Im a beginner at this kind of thing. The capture file is 44 minutes long at 8.09GB when encoded its reduced to 1.04GB.
The playback is poor and I obviously need to Tweek the settings but not sure if Ive got the right settings in the first place.
Any Help appreciated.

Cheers.

Lazyfish.

Hi again,
The capture card is a WINTV 88X if that helps.
Cheers.

First question would be - With your Hauppauge WINTV GO capture card and current settings are you able to capture from other sources besides these 8mm tapes with acceptable color quality? Just to determine if the card is essentially set up OK. If other sources come in with good color then that at least rules out some potential problems.

The obvious setting to affect the colors would be Hue, and 128 is fine, but have you tried adjusting the Hue to see what effect it has? With my Hauppauge 150 card I can adjust the Hue setting, as the video plays, and watch the skin tones change from green to red to normal. Maybe for this particular source you'd need to adjust the Hue setting.

Instead of your WinTV Go card, if you have a firewire port on your PC, play the tapes on your camcorder and output them to your PC's firewire port. Use free software like WinDV to receive the video on your PC as a DV-AVI file.

If your PC doesn't have a firewire port they aren't very expensive, PCI firewire cards are around $15-20 in the U.S.
